I have never used Quest in my worming rotation but am considering it.  Anyone had good luck or bad using this wormer on their horses?

Never used it. do your homework before you decide. The safety levels are so iffy that our local feed stores won't even carry it. I for one can't say if it is good or bad but I would recommend doing some research!!

Yes I use it all the time in rotation with my daily wormer.I use the combocare which is the quest plus tapeworm.I have never had any problems with it.Be careful to read the label though if you plan to use it on young horses.I think it is not recomended for horses under six months of age.

I use it at least once a year in my rotation and it has worked fine.

The original complaints when it first came out about horses dying from it was spurred by using it on horses that were heavily infested and had a huge kill off.  All the dead worms overloading the horse system.

I have 4 tubes sitting on my desk now that I plan to use March 1st.

We have used it with no ill effects.  I would use a weight measure tape to get an idea of your horses weight so you don't overdose.  Some folks I know just shoot the horse a whole tube regardless of age or weight.  Not a good practice in my opinion.

Wormers are a LOT cheaper in the catalogs.  Especially if you buy in bulk (6 or more).  We buy many products from Valley Vet and Country Supply.  They both have websites where you can order online or request a catalog.

RIDE ON!

I have seen people do exactly what Dwight describes, shooting the whole tube regardless of size.  These newer drugs and formulations work as advertised only when used correctly.  If you are unsure about the weight of your horse ask your vet or take them to get them weighed.

Any wormer can kill a heavily infested animal.  When I bought my first show horse, I took him for the vet check and when he passed we wormed him and took him back to the barn.  Thank God the local equine vet owned the barn I used while mine was being completed.  We received a call that next morning that my newly purchased horse nearly died during the night and the vet slept with him keeping him on IV for electrolytes.  Poor kiddo, his belly was full of worms and he laid down in his stall with his bowels just gushing liquid all night.  They cleaned him up the next morning and when I got there he looked like a bag of bones!  This was when I realized that not everyone cared for animals like they should, a hard lesson for a young person.

As with any drug use as directed!

Huntseat very aptly described the results with a heavily infested horse. I use the combocare (moxidectin/praenz spelling problem here) when I suspect tapeworm, BUT am careful about weight of the animal with it. On horses whose deworming history is not known, I usually start out with Exodus (pyrantel pamoate, tube on desk) because it won't cause a huge kill off and it comes in a 47.2 gram tube with 300# marks which is real easy to use on young or small horses or ponies. Also use a generic ivermectin at least twice a year to get the bots. I know that Quest advertises that it is only needed 4 times a year as opposed to the others at 6+ times, but that does not take into consideration the individual circumstances imo. I like to keep to a schedule but if someone starts to look poor or is scratching his/her tail out, then that horse is going to get a dose of Exodus. Moxidectin is a very good tool in the war on worms imo and I'm glad it is available.

Quest is really just a synthetic ivermectin and works in much the same way.  As many have said it's important to accurately dose your horses.  I personally don't see much reason to use Quest (moxidectin) because any ivermectin will do the same thing a little more inexpensively!

Thanks for the input, all of my horses have been on a regular worming shedule for years so I am not concerned about an overload of dead worms in their system.  I have 3 adult horses and one yearling.  One of the adults is a pregnant mare and I was not planning on using it on her or on the yearling, just the other two.  I will check their weight too as a precaution.

Again.... appreciate the helpful feedback.

I have used Quest on horses that are not too old (19+) or too young (yearling and younger) I really prefer to use Zimectrin Gold...

Use it couple times a year.Unless a big mature animal I use a weight tape.If a new animal to me I worm with a someting like Ivermictrin Gold etc. and follow up in two weeks or so with Quest. In fact fixing to order 30 or so tubes.I've done some egg counts in the past that checked high withen a few weeks of using Ivermictrin and Quest took care of that issue. Some lines of horses seem or more inclined to have less natural resistance to small strongles etc.

We have used Quest since it first came on the market, no problems whatsoever. Used on our babies, to my 26 yr old barrel horse. Never had a problem with worms yet. Like others have said, do a little research. Contact a Vet Teaching College (Ames, Iowa has one) see what they think. Don't buy the really cheap stuff instead.. Just remember to use  a weight tape, you'd be surprised what you THINK your horses weigh, and what the difference is with a tape .

I use Quest every third time I worm.  The big difference between it and ivermectrin is that Quest will get the encysted strongyles that you used to have to use the powerpac to get.  Worth the extra $ to me.

I've been using it for years with no problems what so ever.  I use it as part of a rotation worming schedule.

medications such as dewormers have a tolerance bulit in for overdoseage. A friend of mine was using a tube product when the plunger went all the way in giving the pony the whole tube. She called the manufacturer and they assured her the pony would be fine. My arabians are probably less than 1000 lbs but I give the whole tube none the less without any problems.

That dosen't bother me except with Quest. With Ivermictrns I don't split tubes on yearlings etc.My vet has warned me several times to use a weight tape and NOT to dose a new addition that I don't know worming history with it until a few precautions are taken.
