My quarter horse gelding has a strange appetite, for a horse.  I routinely smoke turkeys, and Gump will stand by the fence for hours, waiting on his tidbit.  He LOVES the wing tips!  I don't put foil on the wings, so they get kind of leathery after several hours of smoking,  My horse thinks this is heaven, kind of  like how I think of the turkey tenderloin.  It's a good thing the turkey has two wings.  I don't know how I would explain to the dog if she didn't get one too.

Living proof that horses really do have different personlalities.  The more time I spend with my horses, four and a pony, the more I realize they are all different in many ways.  What one horse really likes, another one might turn their nose up at!  I have to admit, I've never heard of a horse liking smoked turkey?  I heard about one of the drivers on a wagon train we do every year owning a mule that liked jerkey............I thought that was pretty weird.

I am starting to believe that "weird" and "horse" are the same thing; one of mine likes french fries but only with catsup.....several will not eat carrots or apples, only want a certain brand of horsey treat....but whatever suits their darling hearts.....it is my mission to provide!

One of my horses won't eat carrots unless they are the baby carrots from CA!  He eats apples and other kinds of treats, but not regular carrots in the 10 pound bag.

My daughter's old show horse mare loves pop-rocks and Coke.  Pop rocks cause very funny facial expressions.

As a kid growing up on a diary I had an old gelding who loved a bucket of milk.   He'd slurp it down & it made him buck!  Also found my horses have all loved watermelon.  The ones I have now are more conventional, they'd follow me anywhere for an apple...

No, not weird at all.  Xtra likes pizza !  We would go into the barn to visit the horses after coming home from dinner.  Xtra was always stretching his neck to see what was in the togo boxes.  Pizza is his favorite.  My daughter brought home a piece of steak one evening, and he even ate that !

mine loves watermelon, too. She starts slurping and slobbering, but pretty much cleans it to the rind, which I take away.. The first time we gave her some her eyes lit up.. like a kid in a candy store!

My geldings have all learned that lunch on the trail means food for them too.  My husband's gelding started it by wanting him to share his Bar-B-Q potato chips.  Since then they all think they should eat what we eat.  My kids horses eat fruit loops, chips, and the funniest is the pony that likes fruit roll-ups.  He has a really hard time not getting those stuck in his teeth.  My gelding prefers pretzels, grapes and the original crunchy granola bars.  When we break for lunch and hear the saddle bags open all ears go up because they know it's time to eat.

Horses are just funny critters, I guess, as are most of God's creatures.  It's the humans who aren't smart enough to figure it out that think animals are stupid.

tom-tom, my gelding sounds like yours.  He has to try whatever I am having for lunch.  My husband's gelding doesn't normally want treats---until he sees mine getting something then he is ready for whatever my horse got.

haha - no not too funny.  My horse likes peanut butter & jelly sandwhiches, granola bars and black licorice too!  When I ride endurance and have to grab a bite while we are riding, Sam will turn to get his share of the PB&J - hahaha  I always have to bring 2 granola bars too... one for me and one for Sam.

Hi Marla:

Your subject topic made me laugh!!

We used to have a horse that would walk after my mom in the pasture and try to take her beer from her.

The horse I have now has taken a few opportunities to reach over my shoulder and take my PB&J when we stop for lunch on trail rides.  It is funny watching her trying to get the peanut butter off her teeth.

Thank you for the chuckle!

My wife claims I take special care of our Apple trees only for the horses.  (she is right)

On a trail my boo boo will turn his head back when I open my bag knowing he gets a secret treat from it.

My favorite laugh is in the spring before the hay is cut we love to gallop the fields you can get such great lift.  My guy will drag his lips along beside himself pulling at the hay.  Took a few times to get used to a gallop with your horses head at you stirup.

My horse will stop dead and turn around and just stand there when he hears me open my saddle bag too.  He will not budge if he knows I am eating.  When we stop for lunch breaks, my horse also has a packed lunch - peanut butter sandwiches.  He will eat just about anything too.  Now my husbands horse will only eat carrots and apples.  He just  turns his nose up at anything else.
