Trying to plan our first trip of the season and I'm looking at either South Fork or Land Between the Lakes. I've rode just about everywhere in South Fork and love it, but I have never been to LBL and have heard alot of good things about it. So what I was wondering is if I could get some opinions from those of you who have been to both as to which one you prefer. The drive to LBL would be twice as long as the drive to South Fork, but if it is worth it I would like to go. Thanks in advance for all your help.

There is alot of difference in the riding between the two places. At LBL the marked trails are wide enough to get a wagon on with a team. There are unmarked trails that are nice and will be single file, but you need to have some knowledge of the area and where it is brining you out. I have heard there will be a rate increase there sometime this year. It was mentioned that the stalls will be $10 a night, but they will start cleaning them out every day. I have ridden the trails at Big South Fork and they are alot more challenging in my opinion. The trails at LBL are relatively easy and safe for most any rider. I go to LBL most every trip. We have a full time site up there and are only a couple hours away. BSF is a lot longer haul for us and that is one of the only reasons we only go there a couple times every year or so. I guess it comes down to preference, but if you like a challenging ride with lots of scenery, BSF will be the better choice.

Not really into challenging rides, but then again I'm from the mountains so my opinion of what is a challenging ride might be different than someone elses opinion of a challenging ride. But when I ride I do want to see scenery for us that is a big part of riding. So is the scenery not as good at LBL?

IMO, there is no comparison between the scenery at BSF and LBL.  BSF wins hands down!  I would drive further to ride at BSF versus riding at LBL.

Happy Trails!

I've been to both and I second everyone's opinions. BSF is very very scenic, vast and beautiful. Nothing against LBL, but the two places are quite different.

Scenery at LBL is rolling hills, forests and meadows along a large lake. BSF is a river gorge on the Cumberland Plateau with extreme variations in geology. Both are beautiful, but BSF probably has more "wow" factor. We're going there in April. Can't wait!

I have been to both places many times. We are going to LBL next weekend and to BSF for a week in May. We are 100 miles from LBL and about 225 from Bandy Creek at BSF. No comparison that the riding is better at BSF. We like LBL as well but it isn't challenging riding at all and the scenery is nothing real special. LBL is a good place to camp and a good place to work a gaited horse.

I have got to agree with everybody. My favorite place is East Fork Stables, but I also love LBL. The trails are good at both places, but very different. LBL is really good for gaited horses. If you go to LBL, look up Rick & Sylvia, if you can get to ride with Sylvia, you will see lots of good trails. Tell them Pasorider sent ya. They both work and live there and are very knowledgeable ( also very nice)

Thanks for all your help we've decided to go to Honey Creek at BSF we've been there several times before and love it. Maybe if fuel comes down I can talk everyone else into going to LBL, but for now we'll stay closer to home. Thanks again.

LBL trails are pretty boring. No challenge and no spectacular scenery. I went once and would not go back.

I liked both, but they ARE different.  I prefered LBL. We stayed at Honey Creek when we were at Big South Fork.  The wildlife, deer, etc. were in abundance at LBL.  The views were great at Southfork but I think there were more varied trails at LBL...both worth going to.

You could go to Willow Creek, which is close to LBL.  The trails at Willow Creek will be more to your liking. I have ridden all three and LBL is my least favorite.

We've been told that Willow Creek is closed  We really liked the riding there.  Heard that it was bought out and is strictly a hunting camp now.

Dixie - Have you considerred Long C Trails?  It is on the KY/TN border near Scottsville, KY.  That might be closer to you and would be someplace different.  Just a thought.

RIDE ON!

I, too, have heard that Willow Creek is closed.  I tried to access their website today and was not able to do so, I got a "site unavailable" message.

I did some checking and I think you are right about Willow Creek being closed.  What a shame, we do not need to loose places to ride in the South.  I have also been to Long C's and it is a very good place to ride.

It has got to be the most costly expense of going riding. Bummer!!!  I feel I have to keep it full before it goes up again.
