Hello--I'm not quite sure what to do. My new (to me) 04 Land Rover Discovery has a 7 pin round connector and my bp horse trailer has a 6 pin round connector. I went to the dealer to get an adaptor and all they carry is a 7 pin round to a 4 pin flat. Nothing different on the various LR parts sites. My local trailer place where I get my bp serviced said they don't have anything to fit the LR.

I've visited the local Northern and marine store, hit ebay, googled to my fingers are sore and still no adaptor that fits these specs. Is there a site where I can custom order what I need? What are my alternatives? Help/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated on this very frustrating problem!

There is a multi adapter that converts a 7 way to two ports, one 4 flat and one 6 round.  U-haul stores, hitch accessories stores (such as Quality Bumper) and some tire stores carry them, not sure where else.  Be aware, they may be wired differently that your trailer.  I just went through this.  My trailer and old adapter had the brakes as the center pin. The new adapter had left lights as the center pin.  This will cause your brakes to engage all the time and cramp your camping plans.   The only way to tell on the adapter is to turn the thing over and read the molded print on the bottom.  I did not see anything noted on the package, you may have to open it up.  I'm having my trailer converted to the 7-pin.

Does that adaptor work for the 7 pin round? For some reason, I thought it worked for the 7 pin blade or RV and not the round.

I'll call UHaul in the a.m. to check. I would hope it wouldn't affect the brakes. The trailer has self contained inertia brakes so that may not be an issue.

The 7-pole round connector is commonly used in the trucking industry. I would go to a large truck stop, buy a 7-pole connector, and make my own adapter. Or you could put a different connector on the Land Rover.

I think the best solution is to replace the trailer connector.  Easier than the run-around you're doing now.  Beware ...the pin function/location is not standard on the 7 pin connector.  (especially for the brakes.)  An adapter could get you into more trouble.  Local car parts store should have the 7 pin round.  Any competent auto tech can do the job in 1/2 hour.

Are you sure that the Discovery can handle the trailer?  (seems like a short, light vehicle to tow a typical horse trailer) Do you have trailer brakes?

if the trailer has "inertia brakes" (brenderup?) then technically dont you only need a flat 4? if so, i would aquire the avaliable 7 round to flat 4 adapter and have the trailer changed out to a flat 4?????????

The Discovery's towing capacity is 7000 llbs. And the trailer is a Brenderup which is engineered to be pulled by shorter base vehicles due to its very light tongue weight. If I was towing a heavier tongue weight vehicle I could use my F250 but I much prefer the manueverability of the Discovery (previously towed w/my QX4) to the "tank" when towing w/in a couple of hours of home. When loaded up for endurance rides and traveling long distance the F250 is a better hauler esp over mts.

I'm thinking that changing the connector to the Discovery would be a suitable solution. Its a possibility that I can change the trailer connection but I may call Brenderup to get their thoughts. Maybe the flat 4 is all I would need since I'm assuming the inertia brakes don't need a electrical connection to the Disco.

I'm just floored that the flat 4 is the only connection available thru the dealer. Heck, I've gotten more great suggestions here than the dealer's rep gave me in a 1/2 hour consultation.

Glad you're using a brenderup... I liked the trailer, just not the price.

Here's a link to the Brenderup wiring diagram  >>  http://brenderup.com/default.asp?pageid=494&nodeid={0FA699E1-6CB9-4BC4-BB6E-3E2E38BBA036}

Just purchase the 7 pin connector and wire thusly.

(Adapters multiply the connections and potential sources of trouble.  Only downside is anyone borrowing your trailer has to have the same connector...  Oh did I say it's a downside... Rather it's a net positive)

I hear ya. They are a bit steep but I haven't regretted a penny. We decided that instead of having a big wedding w/all the trimmings, we would put the money towards my Brenderup and just do the deed in the local courthouse. Horsewomen and their priorities ya know.....

Thanks everyone for the great suggestions. I'll report back on what we decided to do and how it worked out in case someone else runs into the same issue.

now that i can agree with. went from the trailblazer to the 2500 and man do i miss that trailblazer about 90% of the time........got better mpg, turned sharper, rode better, cost less, etc. but running up saluda grade at 65 mph instead of 45 mph is amusing.

WallyMart carries the 7-pin plug. I recommend putting it on your trailer's pigtail. You'll probably match more vehicles than the 6-pin. Poke around e-trailer.com for wiring info.

Good luck!

Actually, the 7 pin configuration of the Discovery is not the conventional config. It has a 3 male 4 female setup. That is what is causing the problem as the dealer only offers the adaptor that goes to a flat 4 when my trailer has a 6 pin. My regular trailer place took one look and said they wouldn't have anything to fit.

So-my husband found a shop that makes the adaptor custom to your specs. I have to go in tomorrow to let them take a look at the Discovery. It will run $35-40 but if it works then it seems well worth it.

Here is a pic of the Discovery pin config: http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y260/kel2/LRadaptor.jpg

I love the idea of a horse trailer instead of a big glamous wedding..you go girl! I had the same problem with my trailer, finally found an adapter then on and off still had problems with the brakes and running lights. It is being rewired at the moment. Those adapters are the pits. I think you made a good choice...

The Land Rover has the European 7-pole round, and looking at the Brenderup wiring diagram it orginally had the European 7-pole round. I would contact Brenderup in the US and ask them for a 7-pole plug and hard wire it to your trailer

Thats also a great suggestion Big T.

However, I'm more inclined to get the custom piece because I also haul w/ an F250. By changing the connection on the Brenderup, I would cause a problem in connecting to the Ford so I'm thinking that it would be better just to adjust the connect btwn the Disco and the trailer.

isnt ford in bed with land rover some how? might take a look at the backside of the rovers connector socket, maybe it uses the same "universal" backside plug current model ford, gm, and nissan use. that would get you to a "standard" 7 blade rv making an adapter a little easier to get your hands on.http://www.etrailer.com/pc-VWH~11775.htm

thats the standard euro trailer plug  comes in male and femail versions to take 7 core, trailers over here have to have an  rear fog lamp and orange turn signals, small trailers under 3.5 ton are required to have surge brakes, over that air with ABS, so no provision for electric brakes..

If you are having trouble getting a plug let me know I could send you one...

Wow. Thanks for the offer Perfect11s. I'm heading today to the place to see if they can custom fit it but if it doesn't work that just may be up our alley.
