Any opinions on portable corral panels? We are looking into purchasing some - don't want the kind you have to hang on the outside of trailer - something more compact. If so, what brand would you recommend?
Thanks.

Look on longriders gear, or longriders.com.. I'm not sure of the exact name.. they have a portable pvc corral that collapses into itself to a rather compact bundle.. I think they advertise it to fit in the back of the car or truck.. I believe it's price to be @ $600.00 - 700.00, tho..

Train your horses to stay in electric pens (they do need training especially if they have never been around electric fences). You can set up and take down/store electric much faster than panels. It's cheaper to begin with too not to mention you can make large pens if you have the room to set them up. I've seen way too many wrecks with panels, saw the aftermath of one last weekend, luckily no serious injuries or damage done.

That's true.. my mare put her head thru the bars of a borrowed portable corral and pulled it back in on herself, enclosing herself in a standing room only pen..... Luckily she didn't panic when it came back on her, or it would have been Katy bar the door....

Many of the campgrounds we stay at will not allow electric panels - thus the reason for checking into portable panels. Stalls normally run as much as $10 a night per horse, that adds up quickly.

Yes I agree - electric is the answer. I use it wherever we go - now that my horses are used to it, you dont even have to put the energizer on.

I got some steel round bar about 1,2m long and welded some lugs on so that I could attach plastic insulators onto the bar. You just hit them in every 5' or 8' then tread some electric tape through the islators. wala you have a cstome shape coral.

I bought a cheap energizer that hangs on the electric tape and has a croc clip that you clip onto the round bar once you have hit it in (that makes the earth) it has 2 batteries in it and they last about a year...

Easy as pie.

Horses can get in trouble no matter what type of corral.  I use a metal corral that doesn't collapse, but the PVC type that does is called the Carri-Lite and can be found in the Country Supply catalog.  I do long distance competition and see lots of different systems including this system and some home-made PVC corrals.  I have seen some bad accidents when horses ran thru the electric corral dragging the fence behind them.  Before I get advice about training horses to respect the corrals these were seasoned horses that were use to electric fences.  Something just spooked them.  It can happen to the calmest horse.  I had my gelding hook his leg in the metal corral and pull it toward him, but fortunately didn't get hurt.  (He seemed to have learned his lesson as he hasn't done that since and that was five years ago, but you never know.)  I have seen lots of horses who have escaped from electric fences which is another reason that I like the metal corrals.  I do camp in one place that doesn't allow electric corrals so that can be a problem also.  I know one person that liked the Carri-Lite system, really haven't asked anyone else.

I also have the cart a corral. I quit using it and went to electric fence. It fit in my rear tack but that was all I got in there. Electric is so much easier to deal with. Of course unless your horse doesn't do electric.
So if ys want to buy a cart a corral I have one cheap!!!

I Carry both electric and panels. I have found that some places, the ground is much too hard to get the spikes in the ground. I just like to be prepared and I want my horses to have more room than a stall provides.

Yes I can say I have a few bent spikes on some poles. So the other half got a long type nail and on the harder spots pre drills. You probably deal with more rockier areas than we do...But so far so good...Plus so far my main trail horse has done very good with the elec. He has high respect for it. One night he must of rolled and got his feet into the line and pushed down 2 post and the tape was laying on the ground all the big dummy would of had to do was step over it. But he never went past it and backed up when I went to step over it...Think I'll keep him

Go to the photo album secton on this website and look at the pictures posted by Cowgirl98034...  I have a picture of my horse in the aluminum corrals I use.  It is GREAT.  The horse cannot get their head through the panels as the holes are a little too small.  They can however get a leg through if you have a horse that paws; fortunately, my horse doesn't do that.  The gal who sells them rides endurance with me. The cost about $700-750 but are well worth it in my opinion.  I used an electric corral for a while, but when horses got loose at the endurance ridecamps, it was a nightmare as they ran through everybody's corral.  I did not want to sleep with one eye open evry night so invested in the HYH corral.  I have not regretted it and feel my horse is safe at night.  I attach mine to the trailer too, so it is even more stable.  Let me know if you are interested.  I can provide her email and or phone # :)

I do not do endurance (wish I could) but on the times we've been on organized trail rides, there have always been a couple of horses getting out of their electric corrals.  I'd wake up hearing their hooves and their abdomens making that funny boing boing sound they make when they're trotting.. I am putting an electric corral together to have, but I will also purchase a corral panel set when my new (bigger) trailer affords me a place to put them.. I picked up a nice tip here about solar lights.. I'd bet that if you put solar lights at each corner, and in the middle of each fence line (depending on the size of your corral) the light would help deterr those crazy loose horses from running thru your fence.

I love these! I have had them almost 3 years now, and they fit right in the back of my trailer! The are telescopic like. I also have them so they attatch to the side of the trailer to make a bigger pen. I have been highlining alot, quicker and easier, as I get into camp with the rig really late, and hard to set up panels in the dark of the forest. But there is the link and some pics for yas!

http://www.thunderstormranch.com

set up on the tailer with the brackets.....

and in the back of the rear tack, they are about 150 lbs. folded up and I ordered two extra panels to make a pen to fit the two mares if my husband goes with.
