Hi All,

We're headed to LBL in Oct and staying at Wrangler's Campground.  Does anyone know if there are any restaurants nearby or should we plan all of our meals?

Thanks!

I went back in 6/01 so it may be outdated info, but they did have a small resturant on site.  We did eat breakfast there once or twice, so I'm not sure if they provided any other meals.  We do drive out for dinner one night to a place called "The Dinner Bell"  (I think that was the name)  excellent down home cooking buffet style.  There were other places, but you do have to drive a little ways to reach them.

One caution, the stalls are really only standing stalls - very small and they were filled with crap!  In order to use them, we had to remove 3 heaping  wheelbarrows full of manure, wet shavings, etc  then we had to add back shavings, but the people beside us didn't bother to clean stalls so the flies were horrendous.  We ended up using the tie-outs behind the cabins, but the black flies were still horrible.

One morning, I got up early and tried to lay in the lounger chair and read.  I had my book in one hand, and a fly wisp in the other and had to keep swishing the flies constantly - I gave up after 15 mintues...  I did like the trails and we took the horses swimming in the lake, but we were very disappointed in the campground.  We left after 4 days (had planned to stay 6) and went to Bear  Branch in the Shawnee.  When we unloaded the horses and took them into the airy, clean, fly free barn, I swear our two horses let out the biggest sighs.... they were so much happier!  we were too.

LBL does have a restaurant on site. They serve 3 meals a day. Wranglers is a wonderful place to ride. The trails are marked, you get a map at check in and they will tell you how long the trails are,so you can plan your day. They have anything from an 1 hour trails to 8 hours.

The stalls are not as bad as the previous post. Yes, there are some that have to be cleaned out but as for size, I stalled my horses there and didn't feel like they were that small. They also have picket line poles at every campsite, so may want to choose to picket. Do bring you own picket line tho.

As for other restaurants; The Dinner Bell is not too far away, or you can go into Aurora and eat at Willow Pond that serves fish and the Brass Bell that serves steaks and more.

I really don't think that you will be disappointed with Wranglers. I would suggest that you call and try to make reservations as they have very few spots for that and they fill up fast!

Happy Trails

I totally agree GAYTOR...LBL is a nice place..I have seen MUCH worse stalls..CCTR comes to mind...trails are nice and wide and GREAT views along the lake. each campsite has a concrete pad ( patio)to step out of trailer onto and concrete picnic tables at the sites along with the picket poles. We took our own supplies to cook but I have heard there are some nice places to eat within close distances...

And YES some horse people are not so considerate at cleaning up the stalls when they leave. Drive off and let the next guy do their chores..it happens..clean it up..ENJOY your day and HAPPY TRAILS

Thanks, everyone, for the great info.  We have actually had reservations for several months now.  I'm not one to let the grass grow.....  I have a tendancy to plan very early especially when we want to go during  peak seasons.

I have heard the stalls aren't so great but I figured they are probably 8x8 and cleaning poop is no big deal. I carry the head schlepper, I mean husband, with me so, no problem. Hopefully the bugs won't be quite as bad in Oct as they can be in June. It's nice to picket them during the day but tuck them in a nice stall at night so I don't have to listen for every sound all night long. Also, if the weather gets icky, they have some protection.

I'm really looking forward to our trip and we will check out the places you all have mentioned. If you can think of any more, please feel free to send on the info!

The Shawnee sounds really great. That is definitely one of the places I wish to visit in the near future.

Happy Trails!

we go to lbl wranglers campground 3-5 times a year.. have been going since 1992..the stalls are 8x10. most of the time they are cleaned but if you come in early monday morning after a busy wkend they may not be cleaned yet...they have went up on stalls to 10 bucks a night you would be amazed how many stopped using them...i am use to 10 to 15 a night for stalls so we use them every time...try to get stalls that are on the end of the water line which is always opposite of the manure pit (more flys) also not as far to carry water..if you have reservations already you will be in the front section or in a cabin....there are two barns in the front section one with 20 stalls and one with 30...hope you have a good time.. we have reservations there oct 15 16 17 18...its spring break and going to be packed.... happy trails

kershawsowner,
We will be arriving there on the 11th of Oct (Sat) and leaving on the following Sat. so perhaps we will meet you. It's always fun meeting new people. We have a Cato Classic trailer...look for us and thanks very much for the info on the stalls. 8X10 beats the heck out of the 8X8 we had last year at BSF, but the horses were fine anyhow. We have a campsite and our friends have a cabin as they don't have a LQ trailer yet.
Happy Trails to you too

http://www.pattis-settlement.com/ Is located in Grand Rivers, KY not that far from LBL and is a great place to eat. Also check out Aurora BBQ. We leave Oct 17 for LBL for a 10 day week, we only live about 1-1/2 hours and love it. Enjoy your stay.

Willow pond is Aurora is a good place to eat, but where is the Dinner Bell?  We used to eat at the Iron Kettle in Grand River, but it burned down last fall, and their not going to rebuild.  That really bums me out, it had a great buffet.
