My husband took a roundtrip from here to NE KS this week to help his daughter add some curb appeal to her house... gas cost him over $350.!!! How in the heck are we gonna take any riding vacations further than Mark Twain forest around the corner? What are the rest of you doing? and... don't these beautiful LQ trailers look great parked out by the horsebarn with the awning out and the grill lit, pretending we are at Eastfork in TN or the Colorado Rockies?? I think we'll be using our horses for transportation instead of recreation very soon.

I feel your pain!!!!!  I went to OKC last week to pick up my new 4H run around trailer and had a whopping $600 fuel bill!

We did the math and it equaled to about 4.8 mpg. with an empty non LQ aluminum trailer. It spent 2 days in the shop this week.....again.

So, I guess the bigger M2 is going to become the frequent flyer if hubby makes me sell the 2002 GMC dually that gets 3 times what the Ford get with the same trailer. I'm thinking it will be cheaper to keep her until the Ford is fixed properly.

And the way the weather has been here in the Midwest...rain, rain, rain and severe storms. I hate to spend $300 -$400 in fuel just to sit in the trailer and watch the storms roll in.

I passed up a club ride in the hill country of Texas out past San Antonio. It would have cost between $500 & $600 in diesel for me to go. A couple of years ago it only cost me about $200 for the same trip.

I just got back from Big South Fork and it was 435 miles round trip nd I used 181 dollars of fuel. I used to figure mpg now I have started figuring cost per mile and it is kind of scary. 42 cents a mile is kind of mind shaking. Now I drive along going cha-ching cha-ching cha-ching.

We cancelled a trip to Big South Fork in May because of it, and now will probably re-think a trip to Shawnee as well. I finally have my finished weekender and can't afford to use it!! Ditto on the lousy spring weather! Even my "short" horse trips are too costly right now. Found out my Ford gets about 10 mpg now pulling my weekender and a horse! Used to be 12 or so, but I guess the added weight really makes a difference. Hit from all sides! :(

These prices are awful, but I've just cut back on things like eating out and clothes and tack buying.  My trail rides are my favorite thing to do, and I intend to go.  I've been working double shifts and picking up extra hours at work, even some doubletime when I can.  I figure that since the midwest weather sucks 99.999 percent of the time this spring, I can work my butt off for 1 weekend of fun. This holiday weekend has such a strong chance for storms that I'm not sure if I want to risk going....not to mention that many places close the trails if it rains.

I tell you what....I enjoy the rare precious time I get to spend on the trail even more than I used to.

We are paying anywhere from $4.89 to $5.15 a gallon for diesel out here.  Obviously, with two diesel rigs, we are not going far.  Fortunately, we live in an area where we can ride from our property to national forest so that does give us an edge.  It would still be nice to see some other areas, but is out of the question now.

I canceled our Big Creek trip due to the high diesel and crummy rains that won't quit. Couldn't justify spending $400 in fuel to watch it rain. And because of all this torrential rain, the window well couldn't drain fast  enough so I have wet carpet downstairs (yes, it has a cover over it) to take care of. Grrrrr. Hope we have it fixed now. More storms with heavy rain are forcasted for the next two days. Glad we stayed home to monitor the basement.

We are trying go to visit Kansas State Parks. We love riding in the East, but gonna check out closer parks like Eisenhower and Kanopolis. Eagle Ranch has been getting a lot of our business too. Too bad it cost so much for a relaxing weekend trip. Kinda takes the fun out of even having horses. Only doing a handful of shows this year too. I too miss visiting with other horse people.

Ya'll are having too much rain while we are baking down here in the South. I would gladly give up a weekend of riding to have some rain here. We are in a bad way down here and it is only going to get worse now that summer is here. Wish ya'll could send it down!!

We'll send ya some rain, babe! We came home yesterday in a whale of a storm and cut yet another weekend short... after just going around the corner to camp/ride within 20 miles. Oh well, the horses need shoes again anyway. We are learning to appreciate any riding we get.

They may have the reserves on the North Slope, But I doubt that we will ever see $1.50 a gallon gasoline again. And I don't believe that it's our governments fault.

There is a world price for oil. So even if comes out of the North Slope reserves, It will be sold at world market prices.  Add to that the cost of transportation, refining, distribution. It will never be that cheap again. Why do we expect to pay less for a gallon of gasoline than we pay for a gallon of milk or bottled water?

The good thing to know is that there are enough reserves to supply energy for me, my kids and grandkids into the forseeable future. What did he say, enough reserves on the north slope to fuel the United States for 200 years.  Combine that with the oil trapped in the Oil Shale of Utah and Colorado, ( which they estimate will power the US for 400 years)  That should be long enough for mankind to develope some alternative fuels. The higher cost of crude oil will stimulate the development of these other alternatives.  Maybe Bio-diesel from corn or Ethonal from Switch Grass are not the answers. But with crude being over $100 a barrel there will be incentives to go after the alternatives.

I guess I shouldn't complain when we get freak snow storms then up in the mountains and I can't go up there and have to stay on the ranch. I have ours (750 acres) plus 3 other ranches our size and bigger to ride on. The mountains when I do get to go, when no snow, are only 45 min. to 1 1/2 drive where I want to go, they are litterly in my backyard. I guess I should feel more blessed that the fuel hasn't really affected me...................

Just got back from Kanopolis State Park in KS. Got to stay a whopping 1 day. Got there yesterday and it was lightly raining... not forecasted. Rode anyway. Glad we did. Today there was 40+ MPH winds and severe weather with possible twisters tonight. All this wasn't in the forecast when we left. Decided to come home since that area has been having real bad winds, hail and torrential rain. So we spent $200 in Diesel for a day ride!!! Very gorgeous area and looking forward to going back in the fall... after severe weather threat has gone.

I had a chance to go with friends to Shawnee and was glad I didn't. They said it rained every day but one, it was muddy and they didn't ride two days and rode one 1/2 day. Was glad I didn't spend all that money to go and sit in camp and watch it rain. My parents had asked me to take them on a trip so I took them instead since my dad's 83 and I know our time left together is counting down. We traveled from very SE Iowa and followed the Mississippi on both sides up to Wisconsin/Minnesota. The weather treated us nice and only rained once at night. It's a beautiful trip to drive. The rain has been so bad that we couldn't believe how many farmers across Iowa still hadn't had fields even plowed two weeks ago and in our area, there's still a lot not plowed. I can only think of one other time "flood 93" that it was this bad for getting out to ride. It rained hard yestered so today it's lovely weather and real muddy. I have an October ride to the 4J that I'm still planning on going to (6 hour drive) and asked myself "how high it too high before I'd decide not to go?" I feel for all the campgrounds, I'm sure they're all loosing business with the price of fuel.
