I'm trying to decide on a sofa or dinette in my 8 ft. trailer shell. Just wondered how many have had both and which they preferred and why?  I can't make up my mind. I want it to serve as a place to sleep also. Which do you guys prefer?

We currently have just the dinette. We are swapping trailers (due to another issue) and are going with both a sofa and a dinette. I need a sofa to lay down on. After I've made my bed in the mornings, I wont climb back up there. I go to my husbands ropings which sometimes lasts well over 12 hours of sitting in the bleachers and due to back surgeries I need to change position! He wanted to eliminate the dinette but we do occasionally use it. I guess it depends on what you think you would use the most. If i could only have one, I would go with the couch and have a table attached to the wall that folds down when not in use. Lol, did I just say only one???

Personally, I would prefer a sofa and folding table.  RV dinettes tend to be small, so unless you are a size 4 (I am NOT!) they can be a little uncomfortable to sit at.  If I ever save up enough pennies to get a new trailer, I would like to have a futon-type sofa that will make a place for an extra person to sleep.

RIDE ON!

Amen to that Dwight!   Our current table is not comfortable at all ...too cramped and everything is fixed as in not movable.    With the new table we are getting one that is a regular table with regular chairs that we can move.   we'll probably keep it pushed to one side!

Definitely the sofa, for the extra seating and bed. We have a table that we store under the sofa that we can pull out and use as a table but we have rarely used it. We usually eat either outside under the awning or just sit on the sofa with a lap tray.

I have a sofa with a collapsable table like Stablemom. We can store the table underneath or wherever. Our sofa pulls out to make a nice bed and is rather comfortable as I have slept on it before (gave up my bed to my cousin).

I was also told that you can get more storage out of the couch. My water tank is under it as well as hoses, chords, table and many other misc. stuff. Unless you have enough space for both I would go with the sofa.

FWIW,

Tammy

for sure the sofa, we have a 10'swall the sofa pulls out and makes a great bed for one adult and child, or two children i would love to have a big 16'swall lq with sofa and table but if i did ever get one with a table it would have to be bigger than the ones ive seen cramed in most lq trailers...good luck...

Sofa.   And its comfortable sleeping and no putting up and down of the dinette.

Most the rides I go on have food provided.  I don;'t cook, so I can eat just a sandwhich, soup or something light.  I put the plate on the step to the bunk.  EBY trailer with a lower end conversion.

My   dog can jump off the bunk on to the sofa.  He could not with a dinette.  11 lb mini dach.

I have had both and prefer the sofa like most of the other posts have said. Our current trailer has both dinette and seperate sofa, and we use the sofa much more often for taking catnaps, or when hubby wants to strectch out and read and I want to go to bed. How often do you plan to eat in your trailer? Are you fixing meals for a family or just you and one other? If you are doing the family thing with kids, the dinette might be easier on you... less spills etc. The only other good thing about the dinette though is if you play games in the evening with your significant other/family (no, not the mind games.. Ha ha).

What ever you decide, be sure to mount your TV (if you are adding one) on the opposite side so you can stretch out to watch. Happy trailer designing... it's fun!

I guess it really depends on how you use your trailer.  I got to alot of 4-5 day horse shows and take work along with me for down days. Its usually just me in the trailer.   I have the sofa that folds out into a bed and a small removable table.  While its nice to have the extra bed (room for 3 to sleep total - 2 in gn and one on couch), I do wish I had a dinette with a bigger table where I could spread my work out.   I was on the road 49 days this show season and my husband only came with me once.   One time ever where there 3 of us where having the space for a 3rd person to sleep was handy.  If you use a laptop and/or work in your trailer, you might perfer the dinette to the couch.

I echo the "it depends" answer. If you are into a lot of weekend shows or roping's, you might prefer a sofa. If you do a lot of camping or hunting, you will probably prefer a dinette. At ropings, there's a lot of down time between rounds and it might be nice to lay on a sofa instead of crawling into bed to watch tv.
I have a dinette and do a lot more camping/hunting with mine and prefer the dinette. YMMV.

I'm with the "it depends" crowd. ;)

If you have to pick either or, then you probably want to go with the sofa. After a long day, do you go home and sit at the kitchen table to relax? Probably not. You most likely stretch out on the couch and watch some TV.

The ideal situation is the sofa & dinette. You get the best of both worlds and there is plenty of seating if you have several folks in your trailer. But with an 8' short wall, you are going to have to make a choice.

I vote for the sofa!!

I have a friend with a trailer that has a combo kind of deal. It has dinette, but the one seat side goes the length of the bulkhead, so it like having a sofa along with the dinette. I never thought that dinette seats were very comfortable, but this one is cushioned more like a sofa. I've had both, and prefer the sofa, but I agree it depends.-Betty

We've had both. We now have the sofa and much prefer it. Our Bison trailer came with a large table that has folding legs. We can store it on the bed when moving and use it inside or outside.

Boy am I glad I found this message! I'm about to buy a new trailer, and I have been literally jumping back and forth on the sofa vs. the dinette decision. But I chose the sofa model because of the extra cabinets, bigger refrig, etc. (longer trailer with couch vs. shorter trailer with dinette. I finally made up my mind and am going with the longer trailer. But I do a lot of camping, but as one person said, usually we eat outside, or my parent's camper trailer. So I think I've made the right decision!
