The horse was euthanized on the grounds and sent to the CDC. They are trying to get the word out to anyone who may have come in contact with the animal but there were 150,000 people on the grounds. Anyone who may have been bitten or had any of the horse's body fluids come in contact with an open wound or mucous membranes should be tested. That is according to the report that I read.

I had a mare put down in June that had "suspicious" symptoms. I vaccinate regularly and promptly, so I was surprised when my vet said she had to send samples to the State lab. Apparently the rabies vaccination isn't foolproof and rarely an animal will still come down with the disease. WOW. There I was bawling my eyes out and then worrying about my other horses too! The good news is that the test came back "negative". The bad news is we'll never know why my mare got sick. Her main symptom was that she was paralyzed in her hind end, so couldn't get up or pass manure...I'm still sad.

Sounds like EPM or something similar... I think. Or not.
I've never vaccinated for rabies, nor heard that there was even a vaccine for our equine friends. Is it common to vaccinate for rabies where you all are (i'm in the NW).

Sounds exactly like EPM Lost the Sire of two of my horses to it and he was 14 times World Champion and 7 times World Grand Champion sure was sad to see that happen to such a fine animal.

Funny that it don't sound like epm at all to me.
Possibly but not likely. Much more like azotoria(monday morning sickness, Tying up) or maybe tetanus. To bad that the horse was put down prior to finding out the real problem.Epm normally would show neuralogical signs on one side of the body if I'm not mistaken as with most diseases that effect the central nervous system.

They checked my mare for EPM too. Also, she wasn't tied up. I've unfortunately seen that a few times, and that's a few times too many for me. The best guess we have is that she somehow injured her spine when lying down or rolling. Maybe even got kicked by my gelding while she was down. I had a gelding break a leg from getting kicked in pasture several years ago. A freak accident, but it does happen!

They have made a media release to all the media outlets in TN concerning this. The media reported that it was confirmed rabies and informed anyone that visited the grounds to be mindful of this problem should they have any health problems.

The guy that had the rabid horse also owns the Big Piney Trailride in Mo. and the horse was infected before he got to the Celebration. I would be concerned about going to that ride.

The 4-J Land & Cattle Co. bunch are great guys! It was determined that the rabies was contracted probably from a rabid bat. As for their trail ride, it's the best. Why would anyone not go, especially because rabid bats can be in your own backyard?

This is why we, as horse people ,need the I.D. for are horses then everybody would be told that they may have been exsposed to the rabid horse that day

Rabies is spread through saliva, I believe. The Celebration did not want to publicize it because of the unwarranted "panic" that would have ensued (i.e. as on this post).
