OK exactly how do I dump a porta potty? I know sounds weird, but we are about to get one and I've never had one before and don't know anything about them. What kind is the easiest? Are they heavy to carry and/or to dump? Do they splat out when you dump them (I know gross).Do you hook a hose to them to clean them out or what? Will they last a weekend with one/two people? Anything elese??

Mine has a big screw on cap.  You just unscrew it and pour it out.  I take mine out into the pasture and tip it over and then hose it off when it's empty.  How long it lasts depends on how big the tanks are and how often you use it.  I/we only use it overnight so I don't have to empty it so often.

Some come with bags you can dispose of. If it's lightly used you could pour it down your toilet at home when you get back. Not sure if dump stations have a way to dump port o johns in. I'm sure whatever you buy will have better instructions on what to do with the waste.

My husband dumps ours in the septic tank when we get back home. There are 3 of us using it and it will last us for two nights. I think it's heavy. I only carry from the dressing room to the back of the trailer though. It's not far. Good Luck

"Do they splat when you dump them?" LOL, Don't you splat when you dump?!!! WE use a Coleman "potty", and yes it will splat if you are not careful. I dump mine in the trough from the dog kennel that drains to a septic tank, wash it all down, spray it with a bleach solution, let it dry and it's ready to go again. You can dump it in a toilet, just be sure you flush the toilet about the time you start the "dump". My main concern is to clean it up inside and out when you are finished and add a little disenfectant to the tank to help hold down odor and the spread of GERMS!.........HAPPY DUMPING!

If there's a port-a-potty on site, I dump mine out before leaving and I've used the RV dump station before as well. Last resort is the toilet at home..

When camping, I always bring a roll of 13-gallon kitchen-type plastic garbage bags with which to line the potty -- I insert the bag in the bucket underneath the potty's removable seat. After each use, I pour a half-cup of bleach into it, tie it up, and place it in a tip-proof, lidded trash can to be disposed of when I get home. I put a new bag in the potty after every use. Each user has a clean receptacle. The bleach in each bag kills the bacteria and thereby kills the odor. Very tidy.

We use potties only for #2, so we don't go through this process very often. We take care of #1 in the bushes. It makes the camping experience more genuine and, um, spontaneous.

I was about to say! If you had a long night of cold beers (the way we camp) and still used this method, that would be A WHOLE LOT of bags!! It makes much more sense that it's only #2!!!Very good idea!

I have a coleman porta potty which was a gift from a pal. I generally do not ...err...well...uh..number two...becuase its just sorta messy. I can use modern facilites at horse shows. I can just then pour it out in the fields when i get home. I use the water treatment stuff (its blue) and fill'er up before the show with water. Its quite handy.

We use a "bucket Potty" in our trailer. Take a bucket, line it with a trash bag and then fill it 2/3 up with sawdust. The sawdust absorbs the liquid and helps with the odor. We only use it for #1...go to the bath house for serious business.

We cut a hole in the bench seat in the trailer and installed a regular toilet seat. Then we slide a 3 gallon bucket underneath. This works great for us since we mainly use it for those middle of the night and first morning bladder calls.  However, many stores that have camping gear sell a potty seat that fits right on to a 5 gallon bucket.

When the bag needs changing, we pull it out and take it to the dumpster. Then put in a new bag with fresh sawdust. Hey...it's good enough for the horses!

RIDE ON!

If you use the potty chemicals, no, it won't splat!  LOL!

I just unscrew the drain and pour it down our septic clean-out.  You can also pour it in a regular house toilet (and flush)

I dump mine in our full manure spreader........

If you have dogs and dump your waste in a field somewhere, make sure the dogs don't go with you . I think you can figure out what I am getting at........yes they love to roll in smelly stuff!!

Mine has a little spout that turns out to dump. I usually dump it at the porta potty or the dump station. If at the dump station I can hose it out too. I'm usually the only one that uses ours ( because my husband thinks if he uses it he'll have to dump it) it last me 3 days easy and that's everything. Can't go in public.

I just purchased a Thetford 565. It costs a little extra, however what a difference! It is 15" high (Same heigh as the toilet in my house) It has a large holding tank (enought for 60 flushes) however I can dump it myself. . . not to heavy. It has a spout with a cap. You turn the spout to the side, release a valve and everything comes out smooth as silk! The other feature I like. . it has a "billows" wash, so when you flush, the water "rings" the bowl, leaving it nice and clean. (Occassionally it takes two flushes to clean everything, but works great!

I have that very same model and just love it (if one can truly "LVE" a porta potty lol).  It is easy to dump and the bowl rinses very well.  I got mine on sale on-line for about $120 and it was worth every penny.  It is so nice having one in the trailer, great for last minute potty breaks before putting my chaps on!

This is just my opinion of course.  First of all DON"T POOP in it and don't put any paper in it!  If it's only pee and the deodorizer/break up blue stuff in there, just pour it out in the grass somewhere.  If it will last all weekend??  Probably not.  If you're a woman like me, I have to pee alot.  Before I had a LQ, I would put 4 coffee cans with a large rock in each one on a rubber mat in the dressing room.  Leave the lids on the cans, and put the potty on top.  It makes a pretty comfortable height.  I never had it slide off, and the rocks held the cans steady. Only use that camping toilet paper in case you forget and put some in the potty.  I ALWAYS had deodorizer in mine.  Just don't poop, as turds are reluctant to come out of the hole when dumping.  They're stubborn those turds are!
