I cannot believe this weather!  The end of January and temps in the 60's!  I love being able to work outdoors in my shirtsleeves, but If this continues my animals will start shedding way too early.  The temperature swings have been amazing.  Last week the high temps were in the teens, next week they are supposed to be near 70.  I guess global warming and the next ice age are trying to outdo each other!

Hi Marla, yes we have had weird temp swings in Kansas too. We broke a record yesterday - it made it to 70! Average is 30s. Tuesday the high is forcasted for 28! I feel like I've been on a temperature roller coaster all winter - up and down. Luckily, your horses won't shed until their time. The duration of light is what causes them to start shedding. I've already noticed mine starting to lose some hair as I groom them. We are getting more daylight everyday - Woohoo!! Won't be long before daylight savings time and warmer days to ride in.

Marla we have been having yo-yo temps too.  Yesterday I woke up at 3 am and it was 18 degrees.  Then about 2pm we had a temp of 79 and no wind. Went for a 2 hr ride.  I'm not looking forward for the spring winds.  Hate it the most at feeding time, end up getting more on me than the feed buckets sometimes.  The yearlings are shedding like mad, I don't want to bush them out since we are still getting freezing nights.  March 8th can't get here soon enough for daylight savings time.

We in central Tx are having NO water.  Worst drought in forever.  Grass and even trees are dying.  And the freezing at night, 79 degree days are more common than usual.  Cedar pollen is really high this year as well.  argggg.

Even here on the coast we are having wide swings in our temps.. 30's at night and 70's during the day.. Neither of my two are shedding,YET! And NO rain.. I think we had a wet fog the other day, but I don't remember seeing any water falling from the sky... Our pasture grass is but a memory.. In reference to the vet bill/ colicking horses thread.. I'm waiting for it to happen to us.. All of the horses at our stable have their heads buried in round bales all day..

And here in Fla, we're having the coldest winter in many years after last year's being the warmest...  I prefer this weather though as it's such a nice change and 40's at night is no biggie, though it's going down to 30's Wed night.  I know warm to you guys, but a bit chilly for us.

Hutto is about 150 miles west of Conroe. I was over close to that area last week and it is awful over there. I thought it was bad in east Texas but nothing compared to central Texas. At least some areas over here are getting a little rain, but not me!

I have two brothers living in Alaska. Talk about cold! -56 the other day in Fairbanks. I think that the dark in that part of the world would bother me even more than the cold. Two or three days of gloom here and I am ready for the nut house!

I miss TX, but that right there makes me sooooo glad to be in NM now.  My allergies/asthma would have me in the hospital.

We haven't had any rain here either.  We are very overcast right now with predictions of hail for later though.

RAIN!!! We got RAIN!!!!  Hooray!  Now our pastures will have a faint green tinge before the horses eat it all up.. (God! I wish I had my own place!! These money-hungry boarding stables know nothing.. or just don't care.. about pasture management)

Hang in there Ridgegirl, we escaped the ice, but the wind has been awful this winter. It seems as if it is blowing over 35 MPH every other day! Monday we had sustained winds of 40 and 50 MPH gusts. I HATE WIND.

I hope your horses are ok as I remember you stating that you didn't have sheds for them yet. This has been are very strange winter with the up and downs. Did you have much tree damage to clean up and how about your power?

It was 70 Saturday and I rode my QH mare. Poor gal has such a long coat that it took her a very long time to dry. These temp swings are very hard on our animals. Even my roses are starting to turn green and the daffodils/tulips are wanting to come up.

Look out for Spring time weather this year. I think it is going to be very active.

The ice did a great deal of damage to most of the northern half of Arkansas. We were without power for almost 13 days.Still a lot of folks without power at this point.Maybe 1/4 of the electric cooperative's total customers. Here is a link with a picture:My trees have more limbs lying on the ground underneath them than they do in them! My horses were fine. All they needed were their blankets and hay,and they were OK.They're foxtrotters you know, tough bunch.

Sorry, the link won't work in the body of the message:

I love New Mexico!  Almost any kind of terrain you could wish for except the ocean.  14,000 foot mountains to low elevation desert, prairies, canyons, you name it!  And to make it even better, we have some of the finest American Quarter Horses in the world.  How can you beat that?
