Well, I feel like an idiot! Went to AAA today to pay my registration on my 2002 GMC Duramax diesel and was told I needed to smog it.( Of course I waited till the last minute right?)I didn't even see the "SMOG certification required " at the top of my paper work. Anyways... This is the first I had heard of this! I know a lot of people that own diesels and have not heard a thing about this. I had heard that there was talk but had not heard of it actually happening as of yet! This is CRAZY.I was told that this took place as of April 1-st of this year. Well, my registration is due Tuesday. Hope I pass the smog test. :(

Ya, I've been reading about this on my diesel place site. Gotta love the idocrats of CA. You couldn't pay me to live in that state. I've also been reading how CA has started requiring anyone pulling a trailer registered over 10K to have DOT numbers on the truck door even though you're not hauling commercially.

Arizona (Maricopa county) has been requiring emissions testing on diesels for years. Every vehicle over 5 years old must be tested. Just another tax and an extra trip to the emmissions station. Gotta love it!

What occurs in CA WILL occur in the rest of the US in time...Emissions testing for diesels is definitely on the horizon for the rest of the US

I live in Missouri. Emissions testing is not state wide though. I've never had an emissions test and I've owned diesels since 1995. Had a '93 diesel, a 2000 diesel and currently own a 2006. I won't own anything newer then 06 because of that stupid particulate filter on 07 and up.

MO only requires an emission inspection only in select counties and only for certain vehicles. You can go to the MO Dept of Revenue Motor Vehicle site to see the regulations. We own three dodge diesel trucks and do not have to get the emission inspection because we do not live where they are required.

I thought up a few more choice words But I will use rip off :)
The inspection is still 29 per year but Mass has now forced an over 10K GVW vehicle into a comercial inspection station. The station can charge WHAT they want. the going rate is the one hour of labor.

Not really as bad as it sounds. Make sure there is NO aftermarket items in view. (ie:programmer on the dash or even gauges) Aftermarket intake and exhaust is fine. And it is best to take it on a windy day. They do a 3 step throttle smoke test, the first one does not count. (which in my opinon HARD on the engine) They stomp the throttle up to around 2000/2500 rpms and let off called a snap test. Thay are looking for smoke coming out of the exhasut. Which is way it is best to go on a windy day. You need to check NOT all CA counties have to do the same test, some are just the normal older style test and some only are doing the test when the vehicle is sold or being transfered.

HTB that seems to be what Mass just adopted. I was shocked when the computer said "Full Throttle" The tech said he didn't go full but he certainly opened my truck up more than I do at an idle. AND he did it 3 times.
And there was some very large probe inserted into the exhaust.
The tech also said intake and exhaust (as long as there was still a cat attached) were okay. But definately Mods were failing the trucks.

Boned again in Massachusetts.
My opinion the "snap test" 3 throttle test is BS and extremely hard on diesel engines. Go to www.dieselpowermag.com and there is a big write up about the smog test and some of the states and counties in these states and what test they are using.. According to the info I have seen they are not to use the probe test on diesels, just the snap test to check the amount of smoke in a 10 second window.

My truck does spit out smoke when I get on the throttle. Especially going up hill. Just a few seconds though. And it is when I am pulling the trailer. So, should I get out on the freeway and let it out a little before I go in to have it tested?

Certain parts of Colorado require an emissions test to register or renew registration on a vehicle also, whether it's gas or diesel powered. Here they run it on a dyno- and it doesn't matter if it's a pickup or a semi truck.

It is always a good idea to take a little drive before doing any type of smog test. The snap test that you need to worry about on the diesel is (depending on the tester) is anywhere from 2000rpm to full throttle hit and this is done 3 times in a row. The only good thing is the first hit does not count. The tester is looking to see how long and how much smoke is coming out of the tail pipe (smoke must clear within 10 sec.). Again depending on the tester, if he is older and picky he will fail it for any little puff.
They are also checking blow by gases coming out of the oil cap as well. The main ones that need to watch out for this is going the owners of 7.3 Powerstrokes. Make sure you have a fresh oil change and clean air filter before you go. And take the time to check the blow by yourself before hand to save you time and money.
