There have been many post/replys on here in reference to Chinese tires. What about the rims?

I know that there have been problems with Chinese structural steel i.e. cracks, tensil strength, overall quality ect. Has anyone heard or read of any issues with the rims cracking at the lugnuts or any problems in general?

I had a set of them on a Featherlite 4h trailer.  They were a 5 or 6 spoke aluminum.  Sold the trailer to a friend and they seem to be working fine so far.  I think the dealer has sold a few sets of them and hasn't mentioned any problems.

Somewhere on the rim it will say made in China...... or my personal favorite "hecho en China". Most likely on the back side along with the ratings of the rim.

The biggest problem you may encounter with Chinese rims is wheel BALANCING

odds are if your trailer was built after the mid 2000's you are on a chinese rim. I sure wouldn't say all, but most.

Quality Rims and Tires require a small amount of weight to balance the wheels.

loveduffy,

2 things.  1st-Toyota is from Japan not China.  Just because they are both Asian, doesn't mean anything.  That was a very small minded comment.      2nd Toyota's problems are accelorator and brake problems, not rims.  And, by the way, most of them were built right here in the US.

The RV industry has used rims from China for over 8 years.  You shouldn't have any more problems than normal.  There were some "batches" that had inferior steel, but if yours did, it would be obvious by now.

I have to say.. IF given a choice in the matter..I would not buy anything from China..unfortunately we don't have much of a choice on some things...it is shoved down our throats wether we want it or not. Even unknown on some things... they tainted the dog food, baby food, painted the kids toys & jewelery with lead paint.. and thats just what has been "caught"

I for one would rather spend a bit more on MADE IN THE USA..then be forced to buy their crap...this includes the rims on my horse trailer...Yes we are a global world..but a decent STANDARD would be greatly appreciated..

just saying..if that is small minded..so be it..I can live with the title

BUY AMERICAN !!!!

There are some high quality Asian products being manufactured. The various manufacturers will construct their products to standards that are acceptable by the consumers. If they don't, their products will remain unsold. If our sole criteria is the lowest price possible, then we should be fully aware of what we are purchasing.

Please add my name to the list of "small minded people". In this context, it is title of which I would greatly strive to achieve.

The RV industry has also used chinese tires for years. Most of us have first hand knowledge of some of these tire failures. The answer has been that the product is within specs and rated appropriately, they "should be" fine. But have they been? It depends on which side you sit.

While there can be issues with products that are Made in _____ (you can fill in the blank with whatever country you choose), I prefer to spend my money at home. That means a U.S. company with a (preferably) U.S. product. We, rightfully so, have a certain expectation that we hold our products to. Small minded? Maybe. But when it comes right down to it, I prefer to keep a U.S. worker employed.

I think people are misunderstanding what I meant by small minded.  I was commenting on the statement that lumped all Asian people together.  The statement was like saying that because Tiger Woods cheated on his wife, then all golfers must cheat on theirs.  Japan and China have about as much in common as we do with the old USSR.  Different cultures, religions, goals etc.

I agree that we should be buying American whenever possible, but what does that mean?  Last time I checked, the most American built automobile is a Honda, not a GM, Ford, or Dodge.  Without getting too political, if we got rid of some of the stupids regulations that are imposed on manufacters here in the US, we could lower the cost of the products produced and then HTM's would use US products instead.  When you own a buisness sometimes you're forced make some decisions based on profitability not on how you "feel" about something.  But I digress....

I will expand my previous post a little.  I definitely try to buy American.  When I bought the Chinese wheels I mentioned in the previous post I was modifying another trailer with different axles.  The wheels and tires from the Featherlite would work on that trailer.  Therefore, I started searching for a "trailer" wheel to put back on the Featherlite.  I wanted aluminum mainly for the looks and the fact I don't like to run hub covers and I can feel the center hubs whenever I stop.  I will admit that I didn't spend a lot of time searching for trailer specific wheel, but my main choices were Alcoa at $300 each or the Redneck Trailer wheel for $110 each.  I opted for the cheaper ones and to my surprise they showed up with "Made in China" stickers on them.  Was it what I wanted? NO! ,but for the economics that's what I settled for.  I have Alcoa's on my current trailer and certainly do like them.

Not totally no.  If you could buy an alcoa where you're at for about double the price of the chinese I would pay for the alcoa.  The thing that killed me was the shipping cost for the alcoa.  I bought the redneck trailer wheels (local warehouse) thinking they would be an offshoot of an eagle, american racing, or something like that built somewhere close to home.  When they showed up I was surprised by the fact they were chinese (I will admit I lead a sheltered life).  I went ahead and put them on and have they have worked just fine.  My friend still uses that trailer on a regular basis.  I just told him what they were and not to do any stopped wheel turns if possible.  They seemed just fine and are still rolling down the road.  Hope that clears it up a little

I had a set of chinese tires on my new trailer. Blew tire...trailer manufacturer sent new Goodyears mounted on wheels....wheels are brand X.  No markings inside or out.  Of these replacement tire/wheels I have successfully had 3 leaking wheels. Either they cracked just past a weld or it was not welded completely.  Fortunately I had a extra set of wheels (the original set) to replace them with.  Currently waiting on the fourth to go.  I think I have it as my spare.  Can't remember which wheels I've replaced.  Usually I find the crack after the trailer has been sitting for a couple of days and it is not a catastrophic failure.  If the original set starts going I will be getting a good set of Alcoa's.
