How big of a difference does the age of the trailer make?
is there a way to prove the value of the trailer.
One bank told me they might could do better if I had a blue book value? Is there one for horse trailer?

The few banks I've talked to don't act like they wanna touch a loan for a LQ.

It makes a huge difference to a bank what year(how old) a unit is.  They are used to lending money on depreciating items.  Without a quantifiable value, they are reluctant, especially in this economy.

Depending on the manufacturer, it will be difficult to get banks to "buy off" on a LQ.  Most are not listed in the NADA or KBB.  Without a recognized outlet like these two, banks have a hard time assigning value to a unit.  Try this link to see if the brand you are looking at is listed.

Another difficulty is that there are many different conversion companies; some of which are out of business.  So how does a bank know which company was used?  Ask yourself if you would loan money against something that only subjective value can be assigned.  The loan officer has to defend his choice to his higher ups.  The more information he has, the better chance of getting the loan.

A dealer friend of mine avoids banks almost completely and uses Credit Unions.  You might want to try that way.

I just looked my trailer up on NADA and it came up about 50% of it's actual value. When I got my loan from my regular bank for 25K for my LQ they didn't need any documentation but I have good credit and a long relationship.

Financing horse trailers have changed a bunch in the last 12 - 18 months.  Many companies that were financing RV's and horsetrailers; have now exited that business.  Higher downpayments, and closer scrutiny of credit and credit scores is the "norm" today.  Dealers have had to scramble not only to find financing, but many dealers have lost their floorplanning due to several large floorplanning companies also dropping that part of their business.  We have been able to continue to finance customers; IF they have very good credit, and a lot of equity in their trade or a good down payment.  The days of "easy" credit, and 0 down payments are pretty much gone in this industry.

Just like the "laurie" said:  If you have a good, long term relationship with your bank/credit union; your probably not going to have a problem with financing a trailer.  Just be ready to pay more interest than in the past.

I was shocked when I talked to the bank me and my family have used forever and they didn't even wanna talk about loaning on a LQ.

and the other bank where I know the manager, who is a barrel racer, her bank won't let them do loans on trailers as RV's and the most she can loan on a LQ trailer is 15k.

I never realized how hard it would be to get financing on a trailer

The two places I would check for horse trailer financing would be The Good Sam Club or Southeast Financial. Both of these companies specialize in RV financing. A bank would be the last place I would go. Hope this helps.

Forget Good Sam Club, you mention Horse trailer and they aren't interested.   I found a bank, Westfield Bank in OH  that was great, to do a refinance for me, I even got a lower interest rate by 3 points.   We just faxed signed docs  and info back and forth and it was all done within a couple of days. Here's a number call and see if they can help you out.   1-800-368-8930.    Our loan was done a few years back but maybe they can still help you out.

Good luck

Jc, I had the same problem when I was trying to finance an LQ horse trailer (2003 Elite, Outlaw) last July.  I finally got my loan.  For comps, I used horse trailer world.  I had about 20 trailer ad print outs that were very comparable to the trailer that I wanted to purchase. (same quality, width, height, SW, interior features, and number of horses) I had about 25 very good digital photos of the trailer that I wanted to purchase, showing exterior, floor, interior condition and RVIA sticker.  I told the bank that both the trailer manufacturer and conversion company were still in business. I had a spreadhseet showing all of the features possible on an LQ horse trailer, and indicated the features that my proposed trailer had.  I provided a statement of net worth that showed that I had much more in assets than in liabilities and plenty of assets to cover the cost of the trailer several times over. This was my regular bank and I leaned on them big time.  After all of that, I got a loan at 10.5% for 6 years with a 33% down.  Ouch!  I made sure that there was no prepayment penatly when I got the loan and have since paid it off.

I financed my Kiefer LQ through my credit union BUT I did not need to borrow but about 38% of the sales price and only did a 5 year loan. I purchased a new trailer too. My interest rate was 4.75.

I'll keep that in mind and start looking for comparable trailers. I gave the lady the ad to the trailer I'm looking at.

the ag credit place I went will do a 6 year loan on an01 sooner with LQ at 7.3% interest. which makes payments about $290 a month. I would like a smaller interest rate but they didn't sound like I could get much lower than that!

JcNhEmi - what was the name of the Ag Credit Place you refer to? I am planning to finance a portion of a 2001 Sooner myself in the next few days....Thanks everyone for the info. Who knew it would be this difficult to find somewhere? ~Robin

Here's an idea.  You save $300 a month for the next 5 years and then you'll have the $18,000 to pay for a trailer.  Think how rewarding it would be to pay cash for a trailer after saving for 5 years.  Then you can poop and shower right inside your very own trailer.  Or save $300 a month for 2 1/2 years and poop in the public restrooms.
