I have the option of getting a trailer with mangers in it. How do people with and without them feel about them? Also..if one opts to have mangers, is a 7 ft wide trailer wide enough..or should you get 7' 6' to have a bit more room? I do realize it depends on the size of the horses...mine are reiners...so not too big.Thanx in advance

I went from having a four horse stock without mangers to an 8 foot wide gooseneck with LQ with mangers. I love them...I won't go back...

If you have mangers in a trailer with less width, the horse's angle might be a little more forward.

I  hated mine. I had a really nice three horse slant Sundowner which I loved everything about except those silly mangers. They just took too much away from the horse's space. They were only average sized horses, all under 15.2, but they would have their back ends right to the wall, which not only was tight for them, but it made a huge mess on the wall when they had to poo. Now, with that in mind, I don't believe mine was quite 7 foot wide, but I could be wrong. If there is anyway you can load one of your horses into the trailer before buying, that would be very helpful.

There is definitely an advantage to the 7+ wide trailers, but would I buy one again with mangers. The answer is no. Not only was it tight for them, I did not like the fact that they could not lower their heads to clear their sinuses when they needed to.

I love my managers, but my trailer is 8' wide. My 16.1hh horse has room
to drop his head and move around. That was a major concern for me on long trips, so I understand what you are saying.....I know someone that has managers in a 7 1/2 wide trailer and they are happy with their's. I personally would not want mangers unless the trailer was 8' wide. I guess it depends on the sizes of your horses and what your priorties are.
Good luck...

I have mixed emotions about them.  I like having the mangers. My past two trailers both had mangers, but I've gone back to a trailer with out now. I like being able to feed the horses while I travel. I love the storage under the mangers.

What I hate is how narrow it makes the inside of trailer. I occassionally need to stuff an extra horse in my trailers. With no mangers, I can fold the partitions against the front wall and put 3 horses in 2 stalls.  Granted my Logan has big stalls, so it's not so much of a stuff. But with mangers, you can't fold the gate panels flush with the wall. So there is no getting an extra horse in the trailer.  I also have thrown a couple atvs in my trailer at times,  The mangers make it narrow enough that it's a tight fit to get ATVs in and still be able to crawl around them.

So there are trade offs.  What important to you.

I will NEVER buy a trailer without mangers!

Your best bet is to at least get the 7'6", the price is not much difference!

Thank you all for the replies. Yes...i thought it may get tight..but then again, my horses are Reiners...so 15 hands is the max. Good point about not being able to push the dividers back as far....i hadn't thought of that. I do like the extra storage for sure. Now it is escape door on first stall or not...and whether to have a door from tack room into the horse area....ARRRGGHHH... the options are endless!

Love mangers on 8 wide LQ  trailers! We had our 7.5 wide trailer custom built without mangers. Babies love to climb in them! We would have to fill the manger with hay bales and cover with huge pieces of cardboard to keep some of them out. That trailer was designed as a runaround trailer so also need to be able to get the mowers and CATV's in it.

I do like the door from the Tack room.  I use the horse area as a mud room to shake off wet coats, take off chaps or muddy boots, and just plain storage that I can reach thru from the LQ to get stuff out of.

The front escape door is questionable for me.  I never used it when loading the horses.  If you use the front stall as storage, It gives you access to that storage. But if I stack stuff in that stall to store it, Then it gets in the way of the Tack Rooom door.  There is just not that much room in the first stall if you try and keep two doorways clear and open.  If I was trying to exit the trailer from inside. The front escape door always seemed to be locked, because it has the cam locks on the outside. So unless I remembered to open the Cam Locks before hand, it wasn't useable to me.

I would not pass on a trailer that has that door, Seems it's important for resale, But it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me whether it did or did not have the escape door. Bottom line is, It will depend on how you camp as to what will be important to you. I don't hang out at fairgrounds or horse shows. A trailer for me is for primative camping in the mountains.

We have a full 7' wide with mangers, and our horses are 15 hand QH and gaited.  They fit fine and really aren't that cramped.

I have sold trailers for about a dozen years; and 95% of people want mangers in their 8 wide LQ's, and some want them in their 7' wide LQ's.  Most manufacturers will have different width manger for their 7 wides versus 8 wides.  A "used" 8' wide LQ w/o mangers is always a lower resale than one with mangers.  The storage aspect is hard to beat in a trailer with mangers.

I do not have mangers in my current trailer. I'm considering adding a couple of mangers in the next trailer that I order but they limit the amount of stuff you can shove in there, ie. carriages, atv's, etc. I currently have a side ramp on the first stall which I do use a lot when camping. It also has an escape door on the street side which is important for me because my trailer has stock sides, not drop downs, so I need to get in to water the horses. I noticed that Platinum would put an escape door on the curb side which would allow much easier use when camping if your camper door is also on the curb side. This would also allow you to have mangers in all of the stalls. Might be an option for you as it allows you to access the first stall quite easily when camping. I also have a door from the horse area to the LQ. I would not have a trailer without that. I use the back for a lot of storage and it's another way in without having to go outside for stuff. The mangers make great storage but an open trailer allows for a lot more versatility....which is most important to you? Also, just go with the 8ft wide trailer...it gives so much more room overall.

Wow...All great points. Thank you all so much. I think the widest i would go is 7'6. Even if i choose not to have the mangers, i think it will have some nice added room and a lot less scraping poop off the back wall. I am now also thinking of doing a 3 horse instead of 2 which means i should probably get an escape door. I did have one on my last 2 horse, never had to use it..but ya never know with horses......

I wont get a trailer without mangers, just make sure what trailer you get has two seals in the doors to make sure the water stays out.  My Trails West had issues with them leaking untill I made a two seal system for them.  It is only a 7' wide trailer and there is plenty of room for my horses but I have 14.2-15.1 qh's.  But the new trailer coming is 8' wide.

My husband I are looking at buying a used trailer and there is no way we are purchasing one WITHOUT mangers! They are SO nice! We have very often discussed how we don't understand when people order a new trailer why they don't get the manger option. I am okay either way with an escape door, although I think it's nice to be with one rather then without. Also think it is necessary if you are using the trailer for anything other then hauling your horses (sleeping in it) that you have the walk through door. Never know when you may need to get into the back and would prefer to not go outside. Good luck with your decisions.

I ride reiners too, my trailer is 7 1/2 feet wide with mangers and stall length is not a problem. They do have to back out, there isn't room to turn the horse around and walk head first out however. But, as you know, reiners are broke and backing out of a trailer is not usually a big deal.
