We went down in '07 and camped up on the hill with other RV's and horsetrailers without horses... Someone told us they had some problems with their horses coming home sick??? is that true? or just a wacky rumor? Have you had any trouble at the camp or at southfork? We had a ball down there...I hate to see animals and people get injured though...

We have been going for 5 yrs and never had a horse get sick. We prefer to stay down at Buffalo rock but the grounds were so wet last year we went back up on Snowy River Hill. We park rite across from the Tater Diggers and rite next to the horse shoe contests up there. We have such a great time every year I cant imagine us not going. Yes it is hot, expensive, and rugged but we love it! haha. We havent ever parked at Southfork but if they furnish electric and water then it might be worth going over there. We haul water and use a generator like everyone else but it sure would be nice to pull in, plug in, and hook up the water hose.Anyway you should think about coming down there again.

Soutfork has some full hookups (we use one of those) and also a lot of parking minus hookups.  Full hookups for the full time are 120.00.  This is not your entry into the OF Ranch for the races etc, this 120 is just for your full hookup camping spot.  The Southfork managers are very nice and helpful.  There is a big BIG waiting list as there are many more who want hookups than there are available.  We vaccinate for West Nile, the influenzas, EEE WEE VEE, tetanus, and rabies....and rhino.  Have never had anything get sick there, nor anyone I know personally has had a horse or mule get sick.  Some friends' animals have gotten tender on riding the rocks on trails and needed to be shod, some have gotten various rubs and galled from pads or girths and more activity than they might have been used to.  Ours have made it fine.  Yoiu can picket, use portable pens, or hot wire pens (ours looks like a hot wire stockade!) or tie to the trailer whatever.  No glass containers on the OF ranch, and naturally, leave a clean site when you leave.  They do have trash trucks that you can leave your trash off at, and there is a portapotti rental available, and a truck that for a fee will come pump out your LQ holding tanks.  It can be dusty and hot, but sure is a serious cowboy rendezvous!!

I may call SF to see if they have any vacancies but since we have full LG's and a generator not sure the extra 120.00 would be worth it. At both our spots we have "claimed" about 2 acres so we have plenty of room for our corral and extras. Last year was the best year yet for the weather! It never got above 92 and rained several days. It was wet and muddy but it was in the 60's at nite so we done a lot of nite riding. The trip to town was really great but the water was really high and some were not expecting it. As always there are those that arent prepared even though I feel they try to inform everyone on what to expect. As we started to town there was a large couple w/a small child in one of those little buggies with bicycle wheels and they were warned that if the buggie made it to the water it they would have to get out and wade across. About 1 hr into the ride we cross the first creek and sure enough the wheels on the buggy bent. Luckily there was a wagon behind them that let them ride on into town and back. Was told later that Dan had sent a truck to get the buggy. Later in the week we saw them at one of the events and they were complaining that "no one told them it was that rough on the ranch" and they were leaving sooner than they planned because of it. Anyway last year they had an extreme trail ride that was great but extreme! Again when we lined up for the trail ride people were told go to the left if we wanted to go on the extreme ride and go to the right if they wanted to go one the regular ride. Same thing happened again! People were complaining left and rite that it was to rough, to hard on their horses etc. I dont remember having that many bad comments in the past but every one I heard complaining had never been there before and I guess didnt take Dan at his word when he said it was a rough ride to town or that the trail ride was extreme. I think it was our best year yet. They also had an extreme horse v. mule race right before the races each day. It was all timed and they had to open gates, cross a bridge, go thru a hay ring, move bales of hay while your animal stayed ground tied, then load up in a trailer. I was shocked but the MULES WON! They checked in 5200 horses and mules last yea r and had 21000 + people camping. They went into the Guiness Book or World Records for the amount of equines at any one event. It still amazes me that you can get that many stranger together, lots of booze, and still not have any fights! Everyone is so friendly and helpful! We have a blast. Hope you can get down there even for the w/e!

Neither.  We ride 2 of the best looking mules around!  They do a medium to quick walk, not gaited, and not real pokey either.  They do really well in the rugged terrain...

We also have a full LQ with generator (we use it mostly on hunting trips, but handy even in campgrounds sometimes they have to kill the main power for maintainence or overloads!)

Did you ride them last year in the extreme cowboy race there at Clinton? I was very impressed that those mules beat those horses!

We've gone last two years, camped in Buffalo pasture.  My husband loves it, and it's ok with me.  I loved the ride to town, and loved the extreme ride last year.  I knew alot of people were complaining about the extreme trail ride, but didn't know they complained about ride to town.  My sister was with me for a couple of days, and she got in on the extreme ride, she rides a gaited horse and she's a really good rider, but she did not like that ride either.  she got off a couple of times, but for me I figure I was much better off on my mule. For me coming there for  9 days, I'm missing out on alot of trail riding, however I do enjoying riding around the campground and seeing all the campers, It is pretty amazing to see that many people.  But,  I'm a trail rider and that's all I want to do, so I do get a little bored with the races, not that their not exciting.  This is something that everyone should go see atleast once.  If nothing happens we'll be there this year.

We also camp down just past the Buffalo( next field over). Did you get the newsletter asking all permanant campers to come in on 8/15 and get new plates due to so many trees breaking down in the ice storms? We have a Blue F250 w/4 H Bison. I also ride a gaited horse ( painted foxtrotter) husband has a reg. paint he rides. Cant wait and am counting down the days!

Did not get the letter.  We camp right next to rode that crosses over creek, on the right.  White Duramax GMC with western hauler bed style.  3 horse C&C.  Bay Mules, camp with a guy who has a JD Sutherland with 2 slide outs  with a white GMC 4500.  Stop by and see us.   He rides a mule also, but don't know if he's bringing his sorrel or his dun mule.  Hope to see you on the trail rides!!!
