I'm thinking about buying a goose neck trailer from someone, but need to have a good idea of exactly how much it weighs. I'm limited weight-wise because I only have a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 5.9L. The person who owns the trailer has diesel 2500's, so weight is not an issue for them. The data plate on the trailer is hard to read and the seller isn't sure how much it weighs. The trailer is a 1987 Trails West "Chief" 8x14 Two (2) Horse Goose Neck Trailer. I have checked the internet, to no avail and Trails West won't return my e-mails/calls (maybe because they won't be making any money off of me??????). Does anyone have an idea how much this trailer weighs?????

And FYI, we don't live near a weigh station of any kind, so that isn't an option at this point.

Thanks for your help!!!!!

I would go to www.trailswesttrailers.com and compare the features of a new trailer to the features of your trailer. Such as roof material, flooring and so forth. I know that most of the new Trails West Trailers (2 HORSE GN) weigh around 4590. Maybe that can give you a ballpark figure.

Thanks Monsterhorse..........I have tried to guesstimate based on what the new ones weigh and taking the features into consideration, but an 87 is so much different than an 06, I fear I will be way off......

You may want to go ahead and find the nearest truck scales in your area. When I bought a used trailer a couple of months ago I had to have a certified weight slip on the trailer to register it. Here in florida thats how they determine the cost of your tag. So you may be solving 2 problems at once by doing this. This may not be the case in your area though. Good Luck!!

Thanks again Monsterhorse........ I was trying not to have to go that route.... there are no scales close to us...and we do not need a weight slip to register a trailer here in GA........Thanks again!!!!!

with the new laws in georgia you are going to have to get a weight slip to register it now.  we sell many trailers to south georgia and they now require weight slips to register trailers. especially used ones or ones without a title.

I have a 1995 2 horse Charmac gooseneck, 7x7, steel trailer with no ramp, but a big tack area, plus the boot box. It weighs 4500 lbs. My 3 horse gooseneck only weighed 3850, but it was a little smaller (6.6 x 6.6) and more like a stock trailer.  In Washington, the scale weight (empty trailer) is listed on the title.  I pull with a 3/4 ton Chevy Silverado with a 6.0 liter engine.  I guess it also depends on the area you're hauling.  I have mountain passes to cross and it is a lot of work for my truck pulling a full load of horses and gear.  I think a 4500 lb gooseneck hauls differently than a 4500 lb bumper pull though.  You might be able to pull a gooseneck with your truck but not a bumper pull weighing that much...

if you try to get a tag or register a trailer with no title then they require a bill of sale and a weight slip in order for them to register it and tag it for you in the state of georgia.  they just started this as of late.  this usually applies to older trailers that the title has been lost or homemade type trailers.

Hi,  This may sound silly, but do you have a feed mill close by that sells hay?  They should have a scale.  Most of the hay dealers in my area (MD) sell by the ton.  They load up their wagons/trailers and then weigh to figure out cost to buyer.  That might be an idea for you.  I wonder if the previous owner has any literature for the trailer or even a title/registration that may state it.

Just a few thoughts.

Thanks to all that have replied!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!........ I was trying to figure out the weight without having to take it to a scale..... If it weighs too much (for me to pull it, 2 horses and gear with my 1500) I'm not going to buy it, so I was trying to avoid the trouble of getting the current owner to take it to the scales.....FYI, In Georgia, this type of trailer does not require a title, nor does the registration reflect the weight. Anyway, I have convinced the current owner to take it to the scales and that should resolve the issue.
Again, thanks to all that replied!!!!!!!!!!!

I pull a 2h Steel Gn with 4ft DR 20ft long with ram 1500 5.2L and it does very well. I also have a 16ft BP Steel stock that I pull with it and with 4 horses on it does well.

I did talk to Trails West to see if I could find out the weight for you. They did start manufacturing trailers in 1987 but did not produce a "Chief" model that they knew of or have records on. Sorry I couldn't help.
