We have a 2004 3H LQ trailer with an 11 ft SW that is just too much to haul. The LQ is really nice but we just don't use it that much.

I want to get rid of this trailer and get something smaller, with a 4 ft SW and just the very basics - not a fancy conversion package.

I am debating between trying to sell this trailer outright, and then buying a replacement, or trying to trade in the big one for a new one. We owe quite a bit on this trailer - I don't think we are upside down on it the loan, though.

The problem with selling is that I am out of a trailer until I find a replacement, so the idea of a trade-in was appealing, but not sure how dealers would feel about me wanting to trade my $45K trailer for a a $22.5K trailer.

Ideas?  Thoughts?

A dealer will always buy low and sell high, that's just the nature of making a profit.  I think you would be much better off to sell it outright and then buy a smaller trailer, with two separate transactions.

Maybe you could find a dealer to work with who would take your trailer on consignment to get it sold, with the understanding you will buy a trailer from them after the sale.

Just an idea....

Won't be hard at all, once you accept the fact they will give you about $32K for your $45K trailer and buy the way, the $22.5 trailer you thought you were looking at misterously just went to $28K.

Can you sign here please_________________.

With a digital camera and a credit card you can quickly and easily place an advertisement for your trailer in HTW. The fee is nominal and your market is world wide.

We recently sold one of our trailers. In the afternoon I took some photos and downloaded them into my computer. I went on line and placed my add. In four hours, that same evening, I had several calls and it was sold. The new owner picked it up the next night and payed cash.

The two trailers we now have were also purchased through HTW. They both are excellent and we payed less than half the replacement cost of new units. We were able to purchase better equipped trailers than we could have purchased if new.

All of these transactions were easy to complete and the payoff is what we now have sitting in our driverway. Do it yourself, you have nothing to loose by trying. The cost of your add is a fraction of what you stand to loose by trading.

"The problem with selling is that I am out of a trailer until I find a replacement, so the idea of a trade-in was appealing, but not sure...." Check with your banker about a 90 or 180 day loan to buy your replacement trailer when you find it. Then sell your current trailer and pay off the bank loan.

I highly doubt that you would be without a trailer for long.  Once the old one sells I'm sure you'll be VERY motivated to find another.  Besides....even without a trailer for a little while is well worth the thousands that you will save!

The person with the idea of consignment is a very good idea....I work for a dealership and we do alot of consignments....due to your situation.....also when we get a person in with your situation we can set up a deferred payment on your new trailer....which will actually gives you extra time to help you get your trailer sold before the payments on the new trailer starts.

Durn, too bad you are not in Texas.  I have worked out a nice consignment deal with the folks we bought the trailer from, but they don't have what I am looking to replace it with.

And now (just for grins) have been looking at what it would cost to replace my trailer new - all i can say is WOW.  I think I got a pretty good deal with our rig.

So I sold my C&C trailer in one day.  That is the good news. The bad news I am having a h*&ll of a time finding its replacement.   I just wanted something a little smaller that was easier to haul, not as heavy, but still had some comforts.

Looked at a couple of new Exiss's today. Not terrible impressed with the LQ area, as far as quality,  and they were just TOO basic. Where's the loading spot lights? Where's the tie rings? Where's the hydraulic jack?  So I guess I was spoiled, just a little.

Sigh.

Extra $ extra $extra $.  Sure seemed that way when we were looking at new ones.  You'd get nickled and dimed to death at some dealers once you start adding back all the "standards" you are used to.

Keep looking at different dealers. Some won't nickel and dime you for extras. We have one up here (Denny's Trailer Sales) that advertises on this site. I bought a 19 foot awning from them for less than $600 installed, and we didn't even by the trailer from him. We did try to buy one from him, but he didn't have what we wanted in our price range at the time.Good luck.

Put an add that you want to sell or partial trade. I just got my LQ this week from someone who wanted less. So I gave her my GN with weekender and some cash and we are both happy.

Yep, I would do an ad too!  A few yrs ago, I had a really nice 4H 4Star that was loaded & wanted a much smaller trailer.  I had been looking around & the 4 Star dealer in CA actually referred someone to me....they had a 3H Silverlite that fit my requirements fine, so we traded - they got my trailer & I got theirs & a few thousand cash.  Worked out great!
