I have someone in CA that wants to buy my trailer but he wants me to deliver to El Paso. I happen to be going to Midland next weekend and it's another 300+ miles to El Paso. How much should I have him pay for? This is my first time delivering a trailer so I'm not sure how to charge. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Ask yourself a couple of questions, Am I getting what I want out of my trailer? Would I take $500 less than this guy is giving me for it? If both questions are a yes, tell the buyer you will meet him in El Paso for free, put your money in your pocket and smile all the way home. If you can feel out the buyer and you think charging him $500 is not a deal breaker then charge him. I sell alot of trailers, for someone that doesn't sell trailers for a living.

From where I live it's probably 750 miles. I really want to sell the trailer but would probably have to take Friday off due to the plans we have going on in Midland plus getting back for Father's Day. I guess I really don't want to make the drive but like I said would like to get the trailer sold so I can go on looking for a bigger trailer. I figured it would cost no less than $500 in fuel, which I don't want to come out of my pocket. Guess I'll just have to figure out if I want to be on the road that long.

Please be very careful when meeting someone like this. Don't do it alone, and make sure you've made payment arrangements in advance. Lot's of people, including myself have sold trailers this way. With all the people going missing in the news these days a little extra caution is in order. I would charge them the going rate for delivering a trailer for anything over a 100 miles from my home. You'd have to pay me $2,000 to make that drive between Midland & El Paso. :-) You could also ask them to make their own delivery arrangement from Midland or meet you in Midland.

I think I smell a .....SCAM! If they want the trailer bad enough, they will make arrangements to pick the trailer up from you, at your house or place of business, with the CASH for the trailer in their hands.

The trailer would be paid for in full up front, he's already told me that. He can't take off from work to come get it at the moment and has friends in El Paso that could keep the trailer until he could come get it. But as a business deal, I don't want to take a hit on the fuel and time so wanted to know what would be fair for him to pay.

The average rate for trailer/horse hauling is between $1.25 to $2.00 per loaded mile. If you have the time and don't mind the trip, pick your price and see if he will pay. If he wants the trailer and don't have the time he will not mind paying the mileage price. Make sure your trailer check has cleared first, especially if you are delivering to a friend house.

Amen, Betty! There was just a story on the news in Fort Worth about a kid who drove up here from Waco to buy a car, when he got here the "seller" and friends robbed and killed him...poor kid even had a gun and concealed weapons permit but couldn't get to it in time. Be very very careful, this sounds very suspicious to me.

Take everyone's advice. Get paid in full ahead of time (including your mileage expense) and have a signed written bill of sale ahead of time and make sure someone else is with you during the actual transaction. I would charge him a mileage expense for the entire trip (not just from Midland to El Paso). It is in no way your responsibility to transport a purchased trailer, that is the buyers expense!

I called a trailer transporter yesterday that a friend in the trailer business has used and from Fort Worth to El Paso it would be $807. I really don't want to drive that far and suspect that he will not want to pay that much. I definitely won't do this by myself. I'll take my boyfriend for sure. Ask him how much he is paying you to bring it that far? Figure out what it cost you for gas to make the trip and figure out what it cost for your time away from work and thats what I would base my trip on. If I got my price for the trailer and I'm going that way I would not try to make my living hauling one trailer to the person I sold it to. How many others are interested in your trailer at this time? We just sold our Class A diesel Pusher online and delivered it at a half way point. The delivery took us 5 hours one way and we did not charge since we received a great purchase price. I am responding to inform you about cashier's checks. When we arrrived home to deposit our cashiers check, a ten day hold was put on the check. THe bank informed us that cashiers checks are now frequently fraudulent. We felt blessed that our buyer was a legitimate, honest person and our cashier's check was good. PLEASE check with your bank manager on the best way to handle a purchase. I guess the safest way in our part of the country is cash and wire transfer.............Everyone responding is so right suggesting you not go alone..........Be careful and Good Luck!!!
