Anyone ever stay in the field at Graves Mountain Lodge in VA. ? I understand they have stalls for rent. How much trail and is ther additional access to Shenandoah National Park ?. The website is not very detailed, I intend to call and get more info but was hoping for personal accounts as well.  Thanks .

If you have access to RFDtv, watch the show Best of America by Horseback. I just watched a segment that was based at this lodge and they were very informative about the trails and facilities available. Looked very nice.Happy Trails!Margaret

Howdy

Just came back from 3 days at Grave's mountain. They offer field camping only. No hookups but they do have a water spigot. I think through the stable there you can rent stalls. But if you have potable pens you can use them or high line, The trails are great. There are a few around Grave's and yes you can access the National park from there. It's not a fancy place but the riding is great. If you have a self contained rig you'll be find. I carry a generator when I go and a water tank (25 gal) so that I have water for the trailer and horses. You can email them and they will reply about the stables. Where in Md are you located?

Thanks for the nfo, we'll be scheduling a late summer early fall trip. We are near Keymar, north of Frederick on the Carroll/ Frederick line .

I know right where Keymar is.  Do you ever got he the LEague of MD Horsemen?  graves is great, good steep trails.  The stalls are no more than pallets tied together in what is known as the Apple barn.

Been going to Graves the past 6 years in the fall.  We take generators and portable pens.  There are stalls in the main barn that are pretty secure also.  Call ahead to rent them.  The trails are nice and you can get to the waterfall near Skyland from there.  There is an annual ride the end of October you can go to.  They supply meals and entertainment.  Our horses drink the water and we just take a water barrel and fill it there. There is a little country store with everything you need right there.  And, by the way, don't expect to get any phone calls while you're there.  You'll have to go to the road and grab onto the telephone pole and hold one leg out straight to get any reception. HA HA!!

The only thing I hate is going around DC to get there.

I am not going because they charge to much $$.  I was at Graves in May and that will probably be my only trip there for this yr.  Tom Seay was there the week end I was there and is-- most times.  I was just filmed by best of the week before.

The trails are good, but rocky.

I do agree with ya on the $ thing. Seems every year gets more costly and less for it. Guess he has to pay his way to ride like the rest of would like too. I still like going there to ride. Also like riding at Fort Valley. I'm in the wrong part of the state for any good trail riding.

Where is Dameron exactly?? I have lived in MD my whole life and never heard of it?  You can go to Graves any time and just pay the 10.00 per night for field parking and cook your own meals or Fri night fish at the lodge or steak on sat.

Yes I know I can go to Grave's anytime. But just haven't found any time to go. Dameron is at the furthest tip of southerm MD western side. Close to Patuxent River Naval Air Station and Point Lookout State park. Were between the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River. Nice area rural...I've  lived in MD all my life also....

I have ridden in the pax river area , its very nice!  Graves is almost my favorite though.  I have a farm on the other side of the mtn from Graves, on the National Forest side.

Yes this area is nice but not alot for the western riders. We have a lake that is 11 miles around it. Other than that and private farms there isn't much as far as trails. Your neck of the state has it all..I'm jealous!!! IS there any place in your area to camp with your horses?

The LEague of MD Horsemen is a popular place to ride and camp.    Happy Hills in Hancock MD[western Md] is nice.

My farm in VA is good as it accesses NAt Forest trails directly.

I've been to the League once with friends. Nice riding but the camp can get real crowded I hear. I went to Hancock and stayed at Happy Hills for 3 days. It was nice except for the 4 wheelers running around all night long. Your soooo lucky to have a place close to the National forrest. Need a new friend?
