It's only January and I'm already itching to go camping. There is still a bit of snow on the ground from last week's storm and we have another storm moving in this evening. And another heading our way for the weekend!
I think the horses are ready for an adventure too. Dwight's horse keeps standing at the gate, staring at the trailer like he wants to get in and go somewhere. Yesterday he parked himself at the wash rack for the longest time. As if to say, "Hey! Come give me my bath so we can go camping!"

I've got it too. It's snowing big ol' flakes right now... 6-8 inches for today. Bleh. And then an Artic Blast - ugh! Seems like after Christmas I'm ready to go trail riding and camping again as I am usually done with winter after the holidays. I just dream about warmer weather and review new trail ride places. We go to a new place every year and frequent a few of our favorites.
I just hope this Spring is not as wet and miserable as last year. It didn't dry up here in Kansas until Sept. when the rain faucet finally turned off. :)

Rode for about 4 hours today. Still had a dusting of snow on the ground in the shady spots, but the trails were clear (although muddy). I usually ride every other weekend, except during modern gun season which ended just as the snowy weather started. This is the first ride since December 4. The temperature was nice - mid 40's which felt like a heatwave compared to earlier this week! The sky was a beautiful blue, the birds were awesome and my horse took good care of me. We really needed this break from the cabin fever!

Amen. We finally took off and rode the trails around the corner from us last weekend. I found myself loping halfway back to the trailer giggling like I did when I was a little girl. If we can hang on by our fingernails til spring, it will get alot better.

We are finally going to get above freezing today, might even make it to 40*!!! Unfortunately, there is more snow moving in tonight. We never get more than a few inches, just enough to make things messy.

We drove out to Eastern Utah yesterday to the Book Cliff area to go buffalo hunting. It was 5* just before sun up. Spent the day riding the benches, washes and ravines looking for the elusive Tonka. Found a herd late afternoon and harvested a great bull around 3:30. Spent the rest of the day light cutting and processing the beast and several trips in the dark hauling everything back to the truck.
Wonderful day out. But I am so tired after all that work, That my cabin fever has been cured for a few weeks.

Some of the scenery from Yesterdays ride
The Book Cliffs of Utah
The Green River Frozen over
Petrified Log
I am always amazed at the hardiness of the original settlers of these remote areas. Mostly Outlaws from the Wild Bunch that settled along the Outlaw Trail

Beautiful pictures! it's like a whole different world from here on the east coast, isn't it? I'm so jealous.. we've been trail riding pretty much every weekend but I'm itching to go camping once it gets warmer. Maybe Uwharrie this spring- anyone?

Rode 4 hours Saturday in the woods. It was a wonderful day, although my out of shape horse was not crazy about the long climbs up and down the hills. After dropping my friend and her horse off at her house, we got a call that while unsaddling, her horse had gotten loose and wondered into the hay area of the barn. She stepped her front foot through the wooden slats of one of the hay pallets! It took all three of us (well, four counting God) to get her loose. We had to get a crowbar and pry one of the slats off. Very scary and very dangerous. Her horse was ok, but my knees were shaking when we finished.
Glad we got that beautiful weather on the weekend, because we are scheduled for ice tomorrow followed by snow. Bluuuugh!!!

Major cabin fever here as well. 18 inches of white stuff on the ground with more on the way. Last year I started riding the first weekend of February with almost no snow on the ground. It won't be that way this year!

Beautiful pictures!
I'm having some serious cabin fever too... but one of my horses started shedding already, so I am hopeful for an early spring! Anyone else shedding yet?

@theotherhorse - Yes, my old QH mare has started losing some hair. The other 4 are still hanging on to theirs. My old QH mare though is a wooly beast, so she always starts first. My MFTs never get as wooly as she does. In fact one of my MFTs from Florida still looks almost slick - she has very short hair and has been in Kansas for three years, but never seems to grow a full thick coat. She hates winter too. Can't much blame her, I would rather be in Florida right now as we have 16 inches of snow with 4 foot drifts. And more snow on the way next week.
