Just got back from Big South Fork two days ago, We loved it!!! We say that every time we go out riding! We also love Buffalo River and Falling Waters in Arkansas, and Shawnee Nat'l Forest in Illinois ( We went there on the way home). I like the Land Between the Lakes in KY for "warm-up" trails... We also rode Mammoth Cave on the way down ( There are two camps near-great people, one had  the stalls too far from the sites). SOOO... Which are your favorite places??

For me it's a toss up between BSF and Shawnee.  I've only been to Shawnee once but it was great and I can't wait to go back.

We loved riding the Big South Fork too, especially thought the Needle's eye was neat and the ride to Charit Creek Lodge. Hope to go back there someday. Shawnee is also great riding. Heading down to the Buffalo river soon and this will be our first trip down there so looking forward to some new country. Hope we see some elk.

I think our favorite place to ride though is probably the Black Hills. But I guess anywhere is great long as we're seeing it horseback!

Hey Pooper, We are heading down there this week or next... I hope we can get into Erbie. You will not believe some of the trails there... We also like Jim's ( Buffalo River Ranch Resort- on hwy 74 west off 7 at Jasper), but you have to ride so far to get to the river... he is great about showing you around the trails. If you want to see the Elk, take a drive down to Ponca/Boxley Valley... they have pull off areas to view, or, sometimes you can see them down by Steel Creek at the camp (primitive-but has water and pit toilet).. they should be bugaling about now as they will be in Rut soon... I hope you love it as much as we do!

Calamity,

We're going down next weekend. Staying at Centerpoint Horsecamp. I think it is pretty new and supposed to be right across from Centerpoint trailhead. We got a big trailer so we were afraid we mite not be able to get into Steel Creek. Maybe we'll see ya down there somewhere. We've driven around down there and saw the elk in Boxley before and yes they should be bugling. We're really looking forward to riding there. Is it hard to find your way around? I have the NG maps and a gps but I figure there's lots of unmarked trails down there.

Hi Pooper;

From centerpoint camp; cross the road to trailhead- head south or north goes over the east overlook (that big cliff you see at Steel Creek camp) and joins other trails...near Hemmed in Hollow/ Sneed's Creek Tr/or south goes down to Granny Henderson's cabin and Jim's bluff... there are alot of secret places like twin falls and other old homesteads... We are too big for Steel and Centerpoint, but sometimes we stay at Jim's.. We ride both quarterhorses and sometimes Foxtrotters.. (we are bi-polar)

Good question--

For beautiful overlooks etc-- Big South Fork or East Fork is my pick-- but we also love Shawnee National Forest and go at least every October-

Either one you can't go wrong

Just got back from another weekend at Shawnee-only 21/2 hours away.  If you want scenic overlooks, High Knob is the place to ride out of.  They have done tons of work to trails.  If you like wider trails, Shawnee is becoming a good choice.  Personally I still like the narrow rocky, steep trails, but now they have both.  Never been to BSF but have heard alot of people talk about it.  Wouldn't mind trying it out though.

Both camps are fine...but the new one, Mammoth Cave Horsecamp, is cute, but the stalls are way too far away from your campsite. The owner said he had to put it down the hill because of the lateral lines, or something up the hill at the campground. They have a nicely stocked store/office...

The other campground, D-K, is owned by a nice "oldtimer" who is a Circle Y/ Tucker saddle Rep/dealer... the campground and stalls are perfectly laid out, but there is NO shade. If you have awnings, it is fine. The Lincoln trailhead is just across the road...

The trails were ok for a stopover on the way....

You need to go just a little bit more east to Mt. Rogers if you want to see views. It is the best place this side of the mississippi. You will think you are in the Rocky Mountains. I have been a trail guide for folks many times there. The views are breath taking.

Where is Mt. Rogers near?  The post is talking about three different places and sorta hard to figure out what is where.  Sounds like something we would be interested in.  Would like to feel like I'm in the Rockies without making the long haul.

I have rode on both sides of the mountain. Over around Ivanhoe, it is a lot like riding in Big South Fork. Some of the trails are steep but once you get to the top it's just an easy ride. Now, for the BEST views without going to the Rocky Mts. I go to the west side in the Troutdale area. The ground is very rocky, shoes are a must. Saddle time is 6 to 8 hours. This is my piece of heaven on earth.

That sounds like our kind of riding.  We ride the trails in Shawnee that most people don't like to ride because they are too steep and rocky.  Was disappointed in S. Dakota.  What are the best times of year to ride in that area?

I am making my last ride of the season there, at the end of the month. After this month the weather can get unpredictable. Elevation is between 3500 and 5500 ft. I try to ride there 3 times a year, spring, late summer, and fall.

Summer isn't too hot?  I teach school so a long haul trip out of the question in the fall much to my dismay.  Fall is my most favorite time of year.  Spring a possibility--we always have a week off before Easter. Thanks for all of your info.
