Does anyone know the constuction and/or build differences between a 2007 Sooner and a 2010 Sooner (non living quarters)?

I was looking at the 2007 (manufactured 10/06) SE422 4 horse with insulated horse area.  But, I am wondering if it would be worth it to check in to getting a 2010 Sooner Legacy or Saratoga with insulated horse area instead.

My concern is whether or not there has been a change in construction or build between those times that would make the 2007 a better choice for me.  The 2007 is considered "new," but there are hail dings on the roof and it has some other minor repair needs (just from sitting on the lot?, I guess).

Thank you.

Sorry, but I a little confused.  Is the 2007 brand new but never used?  Or am I reading it wrong?  What's the price difference?

The 2007 is new, but does not quite look new in my opinion due to some small issues (QA issues?)  I don't have a price on the 2010 as I have not sought a quote from anyone yet.

I'm just thinking about getting a 2010, but I'm wondering if there have been any engineering changes, structural or build-procedure, that would make it worth it to go with the 2010, or to go with the 2007.  I am leaning toward the 2007 right now.  One of my issues with the 2007 is that the dealer told me the axles are 5200, when I thought (and have been told on this forum) that the 4 horse Sooner has a heavier axle that that as standard.  Maybe the dealer is just wrong?  He was looking at the ID plate.

Thanks.

As was stated in one of your other postings, a trailer with 5200# axles and a 25% hitch support will give you close to ~13K of carrying capacity. If the trailer weighs ~6K, you will have a load capacity of >6K.

Gard,

Thanks.  That does give me some confidence.  In the "trailer ID" thread, those are the number off the trailer I'm looking closely at purchasing.  From that, it looks like the axles are 6080?  Anyway, I do appreciate all the help I have been receiving from this forum.

I would go for the new one, because of your warrenty. I am looking right now too, Does it have to be a Sooner? Check out other makes. They have some real nice ones out there that are affordable.

It's not that it has to be a Sooner, but I really like the interior height, and it just felt "beefier" than it's universal aluminum siblings. However, I would not be adverse to a 7'6" tall/wide Featherlite or Exiss Event. Tomorrow, I am going to try to call Sooner and also check in to a few other questions I have on the universal trailers. What I would not want is to buy a 2010 only to find that the 2007 construction and materials were better. That last think I want is to feel like I am hauling horses in a tin can (which some brands/models I've walked through felt like to me).It would help to know the general price of a 2010 Sooner 4 horse with the LX package if anyone knows.

If it shows 6080 per axle on the VIN tag, it would be rated off of the tires, 3040 per tire on most 10-plys if I remember right. That would mean it probably has 7000# axles. Ask him to see a spec sheet on it.

If it is a new one so  it would still come with the full factory warranty even though it is 3 yrs old.

Tresvolte,

You are right about the axles and the limitation created by the tires as I called Sooner this morning.

As for the 07 trailer, aparently there is another dealer now interested, so I don't think I have any bargaining ability there now.

You may still have more bargaining power than you realize. If someone is standing there ready to bargain and buy at an agreed price, it is far better than having someone else that may just be interested and that is all. Keep negotiating on it. If they throw out there again that they have another dealer interested in it, just tell them to sell it to him if they can, because it doesn't affect your deal unless they do. Be prepared to walk away and play hard ball on it.

I sell a lot of feeder calves out of the back yard. Had a guy want to buy a pair of calves for $650. I had negotiated to $700. He said he had to go think about it, but wanted me to hold them. Told him that I had other people coming to look that afternoon and that the first one to flash the cash is the buyer. He said he was going to buy both or none and left. Called me back that evening and I had sold one of them for $375. He was mad at me, as expected, but I could have waited 2 weeks for that call and still never got it. Remember...1 in the hand is better than 2 in the bush. Sold is better than a maybe anytime.

Thank you for the advice.  My problem is figuring what would be a fair and good price since it's been so long since I bought a horse trailer.  I don't know the usual mark ups over cost, etc.  Buying a car seems easier!  I don't even know if it's considered okay to contact different dealers to see if I can get a better deal on a brand new trailer.

I do like the Sooner trailers, so that's the brand I'm looking at now.  I'll definitely keep your advice in mind.

My husband and I just hauled our new Sooner trailer home. We ended up getting the new 2007 model and it rode home beautifully. We have pulled a steel three horse Circle J bumper pull(1988 year) and this was a totally different experience. We could hardly tell this four horse Sooner trailer was back there at all - except for the large shadow following closely behind us! As to how it will haul with a load - will have to test it out. It was a long journey just to find the trailer and buy it. This forum was instrumental in guiding me along the way.
