We are thinking of ordering a new pickup, Ford F 350. We will probably go with a dually and put on a flatbed. If we order with a box (long bed) we have a 172.4 inch wheel base but with a cab-chassis the wheelbase jumps to 176. Has anyone done the cab-chassis and if so how do you like the ride?

Check the HP ratings. The pickup trucks have 400 hp/800lb torque. The chasis cabs have the detuned 6.7L engine something like 325 or 350 hp. I haven't paid a lot of attention, but have noticed the chassis cab come with a different tune on their engines. That may be more important than the extra 4" of wheelbase.
I let a friend drive my truck last summer and he jack knifed the trailer into my bed, I had to buy a take off bed to replace my damaged bed. They sell for around $1500. It is 8 bolts to undo and 3-4 guys can easily lift it off. Just to give you an idea.

I know for a fact that the Dodge Cab n Chassis has the de-tuned engine and I really wish I would have went with the regular truck but needed the extra payload capabilities that the 4500 had over the 3500 dually. I do also have a Ford 450 dually and LOVE the amazing power the truck has as I have pulled everything I have hooked to it and cant even tell its back there. Do some homework and pick the one that is best suited for your application. Good Luck!!!

Thanks for the responses. We will be getting a diesel engine and have been told the horsepower reduction on the cab and chassis is only when they come with a gas engine. Anyone have a cab and chassis setup with a diesel engine?

I have GM's C&C with the Duramax...NO Problems...I personally use Hillsboro Aluminum Flatbed...http://www.hillsboroindustries.com/Products/AluminumTruckbeds.aspx One thing to be aware of is that the Dodge C&C Cummins has DEF, even though the PICKUP version does not...

I have a 08 F350 CC 4x4 DRW regular bed and my work truck is an 08 F350 CC4x4 DRW cab-chassis. There is quite a difference in the ride on these two trucks. The chassis has a different suspension on the rear. I can load each truck with the same load at different times. The chassis truck will barely squat. The regular bed will give a considerable more amount. I am not sure if you can specify the suspension between the two or if the chassis automatically comes with the heavier suspension. I would pick my regular bed over the chassis truck as far as ride is concerned. Hope this helps.

In the 2011 model ( I haven't checked the 2012) they offered two 6.7L diesel engines. The first and primary engine was used in all pickup trucks and has 400hp/800lbs torque
The second 6.7L diesel engine was used in all chassis cabs and has 300hp/660ft/lbs torque
If you buy the chassis cab you get the detuned engine.
To the OP,I don't think the couple of inches difference in length will be very noticeable in your ride. Unless you are the princess who can feel the pea thru 7 layers of mattresses. It is such a small difference to be a mute point.

Thanks again for all the info. The dealer did some more checking and found that the diesel was also detuned. Thanks to all of you that passed that info on. Sure saved a lot of problems down the road!

I am very much aware of the difference in the HP/Torque ratings on the pickups vs. the cab-chassis. However I looked into this once and I am fairly certain that the difference is that the cab-chassis has to be listed to a particular SAE specification and the pickup does not or is listed to a different specification. The end result is alot of confusion for the average person looking at these ratings and very little if any noticable difference in the driveability or pulling power of the cab-chassis vs the pickup. I have a 2007 F450 cab-chassis which is rated at 325 HP and 575 FtLbs of torque, pulls everything I need to and I don't think a 2007 pickup will run off and leave me behind.

My Ford truck sales guru next town over tells me that the ratings are different, as has been listed here, because the C/C is sold as an "incomplete vehicle". At his store, once they put a bed on it, it becomes finished and the service techs will re-flash the ECM for more horsepower. He did say that he doesn't think they are allowed to go up to the full 400, but they are able to get very close. So before passing on a C/C for that reason, may want to check with your dealer.

forget the overall wheelbase, look at the cab to axel lenght this will tell you what lenght bed to use, most flatbeds will be between 8'6" and 9 foot also a cab and chassis has a straight frame and a regular truck with a pickup box is a dropped frame most cab and chassis rear ends are also few inch's narrower than a regular dually. There is not a problem putting a flat bed on a dropped frame but the other is a cleaner looking installation.
