My loving husband used my trailer to take our riding mower to town and the darling ripped out all my wiring and destroyed my junction box.  He left the "pigtail" looped over the storage hook when he pluged it into the truck and there was no slack so when he took his first turn..........   So, I've been outside most of the morning repairing the wiring and I have almost everything fixed.  I only have one running light working, the right rear which is last on the circuit.  They were all working before this "incident".  Any suggestions on what to look for or why all but one light are out?  We are having a lovely sand storm right now so I'm not going back out to inspect the whole wire until it's over but I thought I'd ask about anything else to look for when I do go back out.

Thanks.

FIRST...I tell him to change the combination to the gun safe and not tell you what it is...at least for a while...

If you were "lucky"...it may be as simple failure where the wires enter the plug

You are looking at, potentially, a lot of grunt work...

You will have to test each wire, one at a time for continuity...

Here are some hints...

My rifle isn't in the gun safe!!!  I keep it next to the bed.  If the problem was in the plug wouldn't it keep all the running lights for working?  My plug is sealed so I can't really check it.

You should have at least 12 lights on that circuit, 3 amber in front, 2 amber on the sides in front, 3 red top of rear roof, 2 red on sides in rear, and 2 combination parking/brake lights. Have you checked the bulbs, I don't know if it possible, but maybe when the wires were being torn from the box, an additonal hot wire crossed the marker terminal, causing too much voltage.

Your single right rear light is probably your right turn signal indicator which is now hooked up to your running light circuit. When you turn on your right indicator, do your running lights flash? You may now know what two of your wires are; a ground which apparently is working and the right turn light. When you place the RTL wire in its appropriate place it will free up an incorrect wire. It becomes a matter of elimination.

If you have a Volt Ohm Meter or a 12v test light, you can find your individual circuits much faster. Your truck's plug will indicate where each wire should be located. Sometimes, not always, the colour of the truck's wires are similar to the trailer's. If you have a sealed trailer plug, you may have to cut all the wires and start over by replacing the plug. Some trailers use wiring with a universal wiring colour function hook up. Often times your owner's manual will have the wiring functions listed, or a placard may be affixed to your trailer's bulkhead. Your trailer's home site on the Internet is also another source of the wiring placement, and a call to your dealer might be useful.

If individual circuits are not working after being correctly wired, I would check the truck's fuses for each circuit. When the wires were ripped out, they may have shorted and blown the fuses. The torn wiring should have no effect on the function of each individual light. It should only involve the mechanical damage and the circuit protection.

It is the right rear that is working, BUT my right blinker, flasher and brake lights are working properly as well so I don't think it's wired wrong.  I've already had to rewire this trailer once because of a stupid kid (different story!!) so I know which wires go where.   I checked the fuses first but I was pretty sure that wasn't it since one light was working.  When this infernal wind quits I'll check the bulbs and pull out the multi meter.  Maybe the hot wire hit the running light wire it and blew the bulbs or the force of the pull  pulled the wire loose from the fixtures or something.  I guess if all else fails I'll order a new "pigtail" and replace it.  I don't like the replacement plugs.  I've had to many problems with them.

*$%& husband.  I love him, but he's not using my trailer anymore!!!  Next time I'll hook up and drive him.   Hmmmmm, maybe he did it on purpose!

Sounds as if you know what to do and how to do it. With your meter and a bit of time and investigation, things should work out. I would look for problems first in the area of the physical damage caused by the pulled wiring. Any shorts there would cause fuses in any the trailer's feed circuits to blow out. I assumed that the damage was done on the trailer and not to your truck's receptacle.

My trailers use six wires in the seven pin plug. The ground and brake wires are quickly identified, leaving only the lights to sort through. Your meter can quickly identify the various feeds.

Once I rebuilt an old trailer that had a real rats nest of wiring. No matter what I did, I kept blowing the fuses without determining what trailer circuit was causing the problem. I used my battery charger to feed the individual wires, and was quickly able to determine what wires worked and what lights they fed. I ripped out all the old unused wires, installed new as necessary and was good to go.

Fortunately the truck wires were protected by the loop on the trailer.  There was no tension on that part.

The problem was the junction box.  There was a broken piece of metal connecting the brake lights to the running lights.  When I stepped on the brake pedal to check my brakes all my running lights came on.  So were good to go now.  Thanks for the suggestions.

Glad you're back in business and haven't shot your husband.

I'm far from an expert electricial.  I don't mind playing with 12volt, but the other stuff scares me!  That's why I haven't wired my trailer yet.  That and I can't get the stupid roof to quit leaking.  I'm gonna have to work on that when it gets warm outside.  I'm gonna have to pull the fiberglass piece off the nose, clean and reseal it.  Then I will PAY someone else to do the electrical.

My husband made a pretty good dinner last night so I decided I wouldn't hurt him.  But I WILL make him feel guilty when the new junction box gets here!

I'd love to get Hank to do the whole durn thing.  If I could just talk hubby into it....  He doesn't see the point in adding a weekend package to a small DR when we already have his camper.  I guess maybe I ought to start training the horses to climb the steps so they can get in there.

Where you ride it needs to be in your saddle bags.  My areas a bit more populated.

I don't have a pistol.  Not that it would do me much good.  You can't shoot off or near to near my horses.  Where I usually ride a good grip on the mane and a fast horse that knows how to get home (and they do!!) is what I need.  I'll never be lost on one of my horses.    If you let go of my old mares reins she'll show you which way home is.  And she's never wrong, even if there is a fence or house in the way.
