I live in northern IL and will try to be as helpful as possible....I looked up a couple of places for you in my IL Trail Riders Handbook and this is what I came up with...There is a place called Wolf Creek State Park and another one called Stephen forbes State Park that I think are what you are looking for, as far as being close to 57....Did you google IL state parks?? I know that if you check out the website that has state parks listed on it will tell you what places have trails and campgrounds for horses...

I would guess Wolf Creek is going to be a pretty good drive off of 57, but I don't know anything about it. I am from S. Central Illinois and ride at Forbes. You would be about 30 minutes from Forbes off of 57 from Salem exit. Campground has electric but no water hook-up, no bathrooms. You can either use your own tie line or tie to metal tie ups they have there. We camp there when we just don't have time to get away very far. Are you looking to just spend the night as a layover or do you want to ride? What part of Missouri? Are you hitting 64 off of 57 or going further south. The more south you go, the more horse campgrounds you will find.

Here is another thought if you just want a layover. Marion Co. Fairgrounds are in Salem, IL right off of 57. I know they have sites to camp at and I am sure they could accomodate horses. When is your trip? The only thing I know coming up this fall is the National Coon Hunt sometime in October and the grounds will be FULL. If you would be interested in that, I could probably p.m. you the contact information.

I've been to Wolf Creek once -- that's by Lake Shelbyville. You're probably 30 minutes off I-57 to go there. It's just Northwest of Mattoon, IL. They do have some electric sites, pit toilets, no showers, hitching rails, or I think you can put up a tie line.

If your horses are unloaded in Illinois, you need an Illinois permit number added to your health certificate.
If you pass thru Illinois and no horse's hoof touches Illinois soil, you only need health papers. If you don't get the permit number, be careful not to fall into the trap of them asking you to unload so they can inspect them, and then asking for your permit number.

Yep. We visit IL frequently with horses. IL is a real pain in the bottom side. Seldom every get checked, but if they stop you and you don't have the proper documents, your in for a world of expense and time. They confiscate your stock, draw the blood, send it off for testing, and charge you for the board, testing, and a big fine. Not worth not having the proper paper work in IL.

Guess that what happens when you are in debt up to your eyeballs-lol! So does the vet have to contact an Illinois agency when they prepare your health papers? Sorry off topic, but just wondering.

Thanks everyone you have given me some leads to check out. We are heading to the Neosho area. Now we dont know if we want to stop in Illinois. Maybe we will head into the northern part of Missouri before we shut down.

the permit number is no big deal. Your vet calls a 1-800 number gets the permit number and writes it on your health certificate. No charge to you or your vet for the permit number. Vet needs to call Mon-Fri 8-5. We live in Missouri and frequent IL quite often it is no big deal to get a number.
