Hi, I am in the market for a trailer. Does anyone have comments about Merhow trailers? They are not common in CA, so I haven't been able to talk to anyone who has owned one. Does anyone have comments - good or bad - about the brand? The one I am looking at is a 2 horse slant, 7'6" tall, steel frame, aluminum skin, wood floor. I like the big windows, and it seems nice and roomy for my warmblood mare. I'm a bit anxious about buying a trailer no-one I know has heard of, so any comments would be appreciated! Has anyone had problems with Merhow Trailers, and how well did the manufacturer respond? Also, any comments about the quality of Merhow trailers vs. Circle J would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've owned two. One a 2h bp. 1987,and when I sold in 2008 for $2500. I was pleased. It was still a great looking little trailer. Had regular maintances and it gave me many many good years. In the later years, maybe 2000, I had my trailer guy replace the ramp springs and Merhow mfg. was quite good about sending them. I also broke an axel in 2004 ...turned on the pavement in a parking lot a little sharp for a 17yr old axel. Again Merhow responded to my trailer guy's request and made me one from the old plans.
My trailer also had wood floors, and they looked in great shape when I sold it.

I'm a proud new owner of a 2009 Merhow 2h slant, 5ft.LQ, steel frame, aluminum skin, and wood floor.

I would suggest you call and speak to Merhow mfg. in Indiana and ask for Mr. Dave the President of the company, nice man. When deciding on my 2009 I visited the plant and found them to be very helpful. Very customer friendly.

My trailer guy and I are pleased.

We just bought a new Merhow. We live in Indiana and Merhow has a long and venerable name in our part of the country. I believe that they are the current record holder for "the oldest manufacturer of Horse trailers in the country (55 or 60 Years) We looked at most everything and for the money nothing came close. We bought our trailer from Gary Robb in Michigan. He was very easy to work with. We we able to talk with a salesmen at the factory and had every question answered professionally and completly. It has been a very enjoyable process. We have friends that have had Merhows for years and knock on wood not a single problem of any consequence to date. If Merhows are new on the left coast you have good things ahead of you. I don't know anything about Circle J other than I thought I read they went out of business recently.

ffmer Welcome to the Forum. If you look in the upper left hand of this page you willl see six buttons. Click on "search" and search for Merhow You will find an overwhelming opinion that Merhow is one of those Manufacturers that my not be Large in size but dose a great job in giving their costmers great value for their money. I also read that Circle J went out of business last Winter or Fall.

Great, thanks for your comments. The more I hear, the more it seems that Merhow is "small but mighty!" Hoping to make a decision very soon. Have not heard a single negative comment about Merhow!

We have a 2009 Merhow with living quarters we bought new. Pulls good, little noisy when the wind hits the aluminum at times, but so far pleased with it. OTHER THEN..... The caulking is already coming off around the windows. Because it has a 8 year warranty I contacted Merhow to see where we should take it for re-doing the caulk. I talked with the President of the company and found him to be very arrogant and unconcerned. I was told, "it's not that hard of a thing to do it yourself. I asked about the 8 year warranty, and he said the caulking was not covered. We've had other brands of horse trailers and never had a problem with caulking around the windows. Minor as it may seem, when you spend $50,000 for a horse trailer you expect the caulking to hold up longer then 2 years!

Ffmer- Don't know what type of riding you do (not that it matters when it comes to trailers). That said, it's a pretty well known H/J brand on the East coast. I had heard about it thru the circuit and ended up getting a 12' LQ with a slide that I love. Super roomy for my *little* 17.1H Dutch WB.

And like others have pointed out, the company has been around for a very long time.

As others have said, Merhow has been around for some time and builds a quality trailer.  I ordered mine in 2006 and have been very pleased with it, and the service I received on a couple very minor problems.

I just got my new Merhow.I was very very impressed with how solid it was made.I have a friend that grew up with horse trailer buildingin his family, he came over to see my Merhow.Even he was impressed with the quality. He went under the trailer and looked at the floor and the welds. He said "you got your self one hell of a great trailer".

so glad to find this thread.  I, too, am looking at a new Merhow.  And, like Pintolady, you don't see many of them at all here in Texas.  I too was impressed by the solid feeling construction - felt like good, heavy, sturdy doors and windows and stall dividers.  Concerned that the president of the company was rude to one of the folks on the thread... though it sounds like many others have had very positive interactions.   Any other comments - positive or negative - would be appreciated!  Thx!
