Hi,  We are looking at a 2004 4HGN slant Silver Star Trailer.   Can anyone tell me anything about them?  Looking for the good, the bad and the ugly.

Thanks

Lori

Hi Lori-

SilverStar trailers are pretty good quality.   I had a '99 and put thousands of miles on it and never had any major problems.  are you buying from a dealer or private?  my old one  was great and the few times things needed replacing the company was very helpful and quick sending parts.  the past few months the factory has been closed - new management, restructuring, $$ problems-  and from what I hear may not be open anytime soon.  that makes me wonder about customer support if you needed it...

I ordered one back in Oct. from a dealer and it never got built and finally- last week!-  got a Lakota instead but thats another story.  he sent a loaner (2004 3H slant) I used for about 2 months.

  1. pros- larger stalls
  2. drop down window on excape door
  3. spring loaded dividers
  4. very large windows
  5. easy to handle ramp (if you like ramps which I don't but it came w/ this loaner)
  1. cons-alum. outside not finished well in corners and seams
  2. drop down windows on flimsy hinges
  3. only had 1 light in horse area (old one had 3)
  4. 1 light inside DR (old one had 2)
  5. the inside framing of 2 of the sliding windows was broken and the windows would only partially slide open
  6. pop rivets instead of screws on dividers and wall mats

just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions.

good luck in your trailer search!     Anita

Hi Anita,

Thanks for the response.  This one is on a dealer's lot.  We haven't firmed anything up yet as we are waiting for insurance to come through with a cheque.  Someone smashed into our other trailer and totaled it!

Anybody else have an opinion?????

Thanks

Lori

I got a 2000, model# 2033MA Silver Star Star-Lite Supreme 3hsl. It has worked good for us and we have had NO problems with it since we bought it new. Wish I had the same trailer with the dressing room and mid-tack cset up like we got, with room for 6 horses rather than 3. What kind of trailer did you have that got "smashed?" And, Who or what dealer are you working with on the 2004 Silver Star?

We have a Jamco 4H that was totalled when some idiot hit my husband from behind going through a construction zone on I 95 near Daytona Beach, FL.  The guy was charged with careless driving.  The Jamco trailer stood up very well in the "box" area.  The horse that was on board was not injured and there was virtually no damage to that part of the trailer due to the construction of the Jamco.  The frame was bent and both axles were bent.

The dealer on the Silver Star is in Ocala, FL.

????Why is the individual that hit you paying for the trailer replacement?????

I don't understand your question!  The INSURANCE is paying us - not the individual that hit us!

I was refering to this statement....

Unfortunately, we can't afford to replace it with another Jamco.  We would buy another one in a heart beat but the insurance is really putting it to us.

You need to get an attorney, because they should replace what was destroyed...

Jamco destroyed...replaced with equivalent Jamco...

We are waiting to hear from the insurance company as to what the pay out will be.  We are just trying to get the amount from them that we had it insured for and that is difficult enough.  They have offered us $10,000 less than the insured value!

Well I have USAA as my insurance...and I would have to consider depreciation of the destroyed item...but GEEZ...$10000 worth of depreciation????

Good luck...hope you end up with another Jamco or at least a C&C...

I have an '03 Silver Star Starlite Supreme - 2H GN with small dressing room. I love the trailer. I would not hesitate to buy another if the need arose, however I believe the company recently changed hands and there have been some issues with the new company (search for other Silver Star threads).

As for insurance...

Your own ins company will only pay you for the assessed value of the damaged trailer, however, they should be able to subrogate against the insurance company of the person who caused your damage. This may take time and you may not get the full value up front - all this depending on the limits of the "other guy's" coverage. If they have to sue, they will consider the cost of the suit against the recoverable amount. You should not have to get your own attorney to pursue this, but your insurance company should advise you of the cost effectiveness of pursuing a lawsuit.

Good luck with this...

Thanks for the info.  The update is that the insurance company finally paid up.  They gave us the amount that we felt was the correct value.  BTW, the other guy's insurance company is paying for the whole thing.
