Maybe at some point in history that was true - For quite a few years, other than interior and exterior trim differences, they are mechanically the same truck. Read Motor Trends test and review of the new models and it will be very clear that they are the same basic pickup.

Used to work for a GMC dealership years ago. Once had a GMC come in with chevy emblem on one side. They were both delivered on the same carrier. We'd get the GMC and the Chevy dealership up the road got the Chevys. My boss (dealership owner) told me that GMC was a heavier duty Chevy truck. All the parts were interchangable.

I have heard the same thing, but don't know the truth of it.
One thing about our closest Chevy dealership, they won't service the GMCs, I have to take it somewhere else. The other Chevy dealer in another area would service the GMC. The one nearest me said they didn't have a GMC license, but the one in the other area said they serviced both (even though they didn't sell GMCs).
Interesting. I have the GMC Duramax 2500HD. Love it!!!!!

I feel there is a difference. I had Chevy Suburbans and the GMC version. I always had some troubles with the Chevy ones, like brakes wearing out WAY too soon and the grill trim piece on my last Chevy peeled the chrome off of the plastic. We switched to the GMC and the grill trim piece was metal and we didn't go thru brake pads.

GMC has some standard options that don't come standard on the Chevys. Like the tranny cooler and such. (A must have if you are towing) There were a few other things that I can't remember off the top of my head. Your paying more for the GMC because you are getting MORE truck.

The approach GM has taken with the Chevy and GMC truck lines is identical to the Ford/Mercury approach to some of thier cars. It's called badge engineering. It's mainly a marketing gimmick to get incrementally more sales out of an identical platform. The mechanicals of the trucks are identical, and GM markets the GMC as "professional grade."
The only real differences is that there are a couple standard features on the GMC that are higher end options on the Chevy. Then all you do is change the look of the grill, headlights, hood, and emblem and you've got a new vehicle. Ford did this with the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable. I've worked as an engineer in the truck industry and this is a common way that American auto companies wring a few more sales out of the same vehicle. There are people that will swear that a GMC is better, but they're buying into a salesman's pitch because mechanically the trucks are the same.

The die hard GMC "old timers" used to say the GMC's were put together with lock washers and the Chevrolets were not. I drive a Chevrolet and it ain't fell apart yet. I got lock washers too! Maybe I got a GMC with Chevrolet badges! The 3.73 ratio is the only axle option in the Chevy and GMC with the Duramax. The 3.73 and 4.10 are available in the 2500 and 3500, 6.0 and 8.1 gassers.
