That's exactly why I got my cell phone. I also live in a part of the country where EVERYWHERE is a long distance call, so found I use it a bunch for setting up appointments, etc. (Being careful to not go over minutes). If you will truly only need it while trailering, I'd go with a prepaid phone card, watching how rollover minutes apply. I trailer at night a fair amount and there is a sense of security knowing that if you have problems you can reach some help.

I got my phone for just rides, and for traveling to and from the parks. I got Cingular, as that had the best coverage here, and they had a flexible plan for us. One thing I would recommend is; always keep your phone on yopur person not on your horse. That way if you are thrown, it is still accessible to you. Unfortunately my "Ponies" have trouble dialing a phone, so that is not an option if you are hurt. I also put a radio shack c.b. in the truck for talking to the other trucks in our club as we go along. it's is often staticy, but the new frs ones will not have as much trouble.

You don't have a cell phone??!!
Cingular has the best coverage but after 13 years with them, we're now with Sprint because Cingular's customer service SUCKS so bad. Like the above poster said, keep your phone on you, not your horse!

How have you survived all these years without a cell phone? We've had Verizon for years and love it. Hubby has Cingular with his Blackberry, he hates it! Cingular that is

I cringe each month when I pay my phone bills. But celluar phones are a part of life nowdays.
In fact on a recent ride to an unfamilar area. My friends who planned the ride and were basiclly the leaders, kept calling a guide they had hired to get directions several times during the day. Years ago, we would have just muddled along with our maps and compass. Now with the improved celluar coverage, You can call for help almost any where and any time, whether it be for direction of life flight
And for me, It allows me to play hooky from work, go for a ride during the week and still conduct business while sitting on top a horse. I've gotten a bluetooth ear piece that I use while riding. that way, I can talk on the phone and still keep both hands on the reins when riding my green colt.

Oh painted horse....
I envy you doing your business while on horse back. I would want to be able to contact my suppliers and sales staff to get done what I need, and still enjoy the day. But I still commute and work inside a big ole concrete box, so can't do that.

We use Alltel, works most places, but when it dont work, you cant beat On-Star, works almost everywhere, have in our Duramax
I believe "On-Star" is satellite based vs the ground based cell phone system. As long as you can see the sky, On-Star will work. You could get a satellite phone ... Then you won't worry about the cost. The sat-phone folks will have all of your money... LOL

Our friend rented a satelite phone for a wilderness trip. He said it cost $30 for a month with 10 minutes use included. Not a bad insurance policy. We ride a lot in wilderness where no cell phone works.
For regular cell use, we have US Cellular's National plan. If there is a tower for any company, we'll get service. We're happy with it.
