We are thinking about getting a new dually. So far, none of the diesels we own have needed the hippie juice. How is everyone liking that system? Is it actually better than the burning chamber on the 08 thru 12 models?

I vowed not to buy a truck newer then 2006 to avoid these confounded systems after all the problems I've read. If you haven't already you might frequent dieselstop.com and dieselplace.com

This is my first truck to use urea "DEF" and so far no issue. I bought a 2-1/2 gal box of DEF for $12.00 after that I fill it at the truckstop for $2.60 /gal when needed. A tank of DEF with last several thousand miles. The only thing I've been told is not to let it run out.

Around here I have seen and heard good and bad about all 3. Bad mainly from GM. Not sure how much DEF these trucks should use but everyone I have talked to about them all have something different to say. For the most part it seems like these truck use a tank of DEF for every 2 tanks of diesel which good get real expensive real fast. I do know I am always on call for a buddy of mine that has a 13 Chevrolet 3500 that is always going into limp mode with issues related to this mess..Myself I will stick with my Dodge 6.7 with a full delete kit.

Running commercial with a delete kit is just asking to be fined...

WHO is running commercial? I haul for myself and is all for farm use only! Only have to travel to Kansas to buy hay since my horses love the stuff from there not to mention better quality and cheaper. And my friend with the trouble making GM truck lives in Central Ok and only hauls his own hay and horses too.

We are Dodge folks. So, if we don't get a new one, what would the best years be to look for in gently used?
In my opinion any of the but the late 04 and early 05 models. Seems like most of those year models I have bought and sold have had the most injector issues out of all of them. Not many people like them but I would rather have a 6.7L than the 5.9 mainly because the factory exhaust brake which is worth its weight in gold!

We have a 2012 F350 dually that needs DEF. Not a big deal, just a little bit of a nuisance. I find the easiest way is when I fill up at a truck stop, which I have to do when hauling the LQ trailer, they often have a fill station right with the diesel pump. I prefer that so it fills it up without any waste. The only thing that really bugs me is that the DEF tank is 4 gallons and the stuff you buy in the jug comes in 2.5 gallons and of course they tell you not to over fill it as it will damage the system. The one key is to not get it on the finish of your truck, it will eat the paint. Rinse it off right away if you get that crap on the outside of vehicle. Over all I wouldn't buy or not buy a truck based on DEF, it just is not that big a deal.

I have a 2011 F350 that uses the DEF. I just turned 137,000 miles on that truck. No problems. About every 5000 miles I pull into a truck stop like Flying J and insert the DEF nozzle in the tank. My tank holds 5.2 gallons, But I never run it empty, So I usually end up putting in around 4 gallons. @ $2.89 or what ever a gallon. So about $12.00 everytime I top off.
It's just no big deal. Most of the ranch stores offer it in 2.5 gal jugs for $9 or $10, if you don't have a major truck stop near by. It's easy to buy and just dump a jug in every 2000-3000 miles.
Other than having to fill the tank occassionally, the truck is no different to drive from any of my past truck.
