My brake controller has been working fine until I took it to the shop to get a new fuel pump.  The trailer brakes work when I push the lever manually (light goes from green to red and brakes definitely work) but when I apply the brakes on the truck, the coltroller light now stays green.  I tried turning both dials both ways, to see if I could get the light to turn red, but it doesn't.  I don't know if I have trailer brakes or not when I apply my truck brakes!  The controller must have gotten bumped when it was at the shop...  how can I reset it so it will turn dark orange/red when I apply my truck brakes.  I tried applying the brakes and then adjusting the dials but so far nothing has worked.  Argh.

Maybe it suffered some repair tech induced problem.
I suggest you get out the set-up ("levelling") instructions and start over as if it was a new install. If you don't still have the booklet maybe someone on here can help if you provide make and model, or contact the manufacturer for another copy, e.g. Tekonsha.

Thanks Reg.  I have a Tekonsha brake controller.  I found the instruction pamphlet and will start over as if I am installing for the first time.  *

Well - looks like I am going to have to take a trip to the local trailer repair shop... I tried the instruction pamphlet but I can't get the trailer brakes to work without operating the controller manually. I have reset a controller before on a different truck and trailer with good results, but not this time. Better safe than sorry. Rats.

cowgirl98034,

Since You've tried the dials/leveling approach and that didn't work You might want to look at the brake switch circuit that tells Your controller to activate when You apply the brakes on your vehicle. Sounds like there is no connection at that point.Just another thing that You might want to try before heading to the shop!

Hope this helps,    Ardly

What make truck is it in?  I had the exact same thing happen to me last week with a rig I was workin' on.  It was a 2002 Dodge.  As it turns out Dodge has there brake lamp circuit fused, if that fuse is bad, same results.  Check fuse #24, should be a 15 A fuse in the distribution box under the hood. (on that Dodge anyhow)  If your rig is different still wouldn't hurt to grab the O/M and see if it has a fuse listed for the same kind of thing.

Just something to check out that wouldn't cost more than a buck for a fuse before $60.00 for an hour of checkin' things out.  If they put on a new fuel pump they MAY have been in the dist. box to cut power to the old pump before R/R, they may have knocked a fuse loose, or driped some fuel on it, etc, etc,.

Some brake controller give you the bench test instructions and you can check the controller yourself, if it is ok them check fuses, relays connections.

Hi - where in the heck is the brake switch circuit that tells Your controller to activate when You apply the brakes on your vehicle. I'll take a look at the fuses tomorrow. It's a 1999 Chevy Silverado LT, 4x4, extra cab, 6.0 Liter. Thje Chevy dealer replaced the fuel pump so maybe I'll give them a call before taking it to the trailer shop and ask them about messing with the fuses... And what is the "dist box"?

cowgirl98034,

Sorry, but I can't tell You where the brake switch circuit or dist box is in that particular vehicle but I would suggest to look in the owners manual or do a search online for those items. The distrubution box that the other poster mentioned is simply a place that has allot of fuses to distibute power throughout the vehicle.........they are usually behind a panel located under the dash or in a plastic inclosure under the hood in the engine compartment or both.                             The easiest way to check for the problem is to look at your brake controller installation sheet and find out which wire goes from the vehicle brake switch to the brake controller and test to see if it has power while applying the brakes. If it does not then You can worry about finding a blown fuse/loose conection next.           If it does have power when the brakes are apllyed then the trouble should be elsewhere??not sure on that one!!

Hope thats not confusing,    Ardly

Have you checked to see if your brake lights on the truck are comming on when you push the break pedal. If so, I would think the fuse for the brake control switch is ok.

Oh yeah, thanks barry,

That was another odd thing on that Dodge... get this, the brake lights would light up if the ignition was in the "on" position and the pedal was pushed, but would NOT light up otherwise.  After I replaced that fuse then they would light up like normal when the pedal was pushed, even with the key off.  They had to be able to get power from two different sources, weird huh, still haven't figured that one out.  Oh well, all works normal now.

yee-haw... I stopped by the local Chevy dealer this morning and had a mechanic (electircal specialist) check it out...  turns out the fuse that is needed to send the signal to the controller, was actually gone!  Don't have any idea how that happened.  I didn't even know there were fuses under that cover under the hood.  Anyway, it took them about 10 minutes and cost me nothing.  I took the truck back to the barn, hooked up the trailer, re-levered it and now it works!  Thanks for the suggestions everybody.  It saved me a some money I am sure :)
