Anyone have experience with the new Toyota Tundra? I have done dozens of searches and comparisons between it and the Chevy 2500, Ford F250, and Dodge 2500...it always comes out on top on paper. So, any REAL opinions? The tow rating is above the others, but the payload is not. If I am hauling a gooseneck, will the additional weight on the frame of the truck be a factor?
We are looking to buy a new truck soon, and want the best truck we can get for the job we want to do.
Current rig: 97 Dodge 1500, 16' steel stock trailer modified a bit to have a tack room. After we get a new truck, we plan to get a 3 horse gooseneck, possibly with LQ - depends on what we can find.

If you are looking to go up to an LQ I would go with a 3/4 ton truck not a half ton with a high towing capacity and I would go diesel if at all possible. With fuel prices what they are the added performance and fuel mileage of the diesel are huge advantages. With a 3/4 ton you are going to get bigger springs, brakes, and a bigger drive train that will handle the stress of pulling an LQ trailer.

I personally would not pull a 3H LQ with a Toyota Tundra.I would want a 3/4 T.

You are comparing the Toyota to the 3/4 ton trucks. Apples and Oranges. If you are shopping for a half ton truck, go ahead and put it in the mix with each of the 1500 series pickups . Personally, I wouldn't pull a loaded three horse with a half ton truck.

Curb weight (translate "stripped down, no people") on a 2008 Tundra is 5520 lbs. The GVWR is 7100 lbs. With even a smallish payload of 300 lbs (translate "2 skinny people in bathing suits"), that would leave you with a hitch weight capacity of around 1280 lbs. Assuming a 20% pin weight, that equates to a 6400 lb loaded trailer. Subtract 3000 lbs for three average to smallish horses and you'll need a trailer that weighs 3400 lbs or less, counting all your tack and supplies.

Me and my wife come in at 310 together (in our clothes) healthy, not skinny......our horses appreciate that.

Now Im the last person to talk about "needing" a bigger truck, but a Tundra is a class 1 truck, it cannot be compared to a class 2 truck....should you actually compare them the Tundra will lose. You can probably get away with a loaded 3h GN (no LQ) IF you load by the rear axle rating. BUT since your already talking about a 3h with LQ you really should be looking at a larger truck.
We saw a Nissan Titan at Kings Mountain this weekend, had a 2h GN LQ with one horse on board........it was loaded down pretty good......even by my standards.
