Need to add a gooseneck hitch in a 2006 Ford F250 PSD Crew Cab Short Bed 2wd to pull a Cimarron 3 horse trailer with LQ. Trying to decide on an underbed hitch like the B&W Turnover Ball hitch vs a overbed hitch with the rails and gooseneck adapter plate which you could also use a 5th wheel adapter on if needed, I believe. Would like to know some pros and cons of each hitch type.

I have a B&W and have no reason not to like it: it stays bolted to the truck and the trailer stays connected. The "benefit" is pretty obvious in that if you don't want the ball in the middle of the bed you can turn it over. They have a 5th wheel adaptor for it but I have not had any reason to need it.

I have had two trucks with the hidden hitches and they were fine. I never put them down after I had the truck couple of months so the last truck I just welded it in like I used to do. 185 dollars. Sure alot cheaper than 500 but I only use the truck to pull a trailer 90% of the time. I guess it depends on how much you use the bed.

I'm using the turn over type hitch in my truck . In the past I had tried the type that goes in the rails , mounted in the bed . At the time I had a fifth wheel travel trailer . I could remove the fifth wheel hitch , and then replace it with the gooseneck hitch . The problem I saw with the rails in the bed sytem was the hitches were hard to get lined back up , and making them fit in the rails .

I use the rails and above bed ball plate.  I've used this same hitch on 3 different trucks.  I just have the dealership take it out and install it  on the new truck.  The rails have never been a problem with anything I've ever hauled in the bed of the truck.  The plate is easy to remove and reinstall.  I believe I paid about $300 for the thing, 4 years ago.

I have a B&W Turnover hitch and love it. I have it in two duallys and one 3/4 diesel. I also haul ATVs and all kinds of other things so the fact a I can remove it and have a complete flat truck bed makes it great. It all ddepends on how much you are going to use it for hauling vs a truck bed.

Mine is underbed, through a trap door.
I like getting the whole truck bed back when I don't have the trailer attached, although that is rare. I don't have to de-grease my dog. It probably takes a bit more cranking to take the trailer off than if the ball was above bed level - argueably I need the exercise.
There might be a case for having the pivot point between truck and trailer as low as possible - theoretically it is probably more stable, though I don't know how much.

We have had both. We installed the rails in a chevy but couldn't use that truck for much else with those rails in the way. In my Ford ( which as a 8 ft bed) I wanted the turn over ball- like Reg said, we had the use of the truck when we needed it. We installed both ourselves.

I'd get the ball you want and get the adapter for the 5th wheel.  We looked at a few different "systems" and found that they were too much of a pain to switch out.

I have tbe B&W and really like it - never had a "hide-a-hitch" before and it's been real handy.

I have the rails in my Chevy and Dodge. I have a 5th wheel camper and pull a goose neck for a horse rescue. I like the versatility of having both and have no problems hauling anything in the bed. I just take the 5th wheel hitch and the goose neck plate out. The Reese rails are low profile and accommodate an assortment of 5th wheel hitches and goose neck plates.
