Thinking about planning a camp trip to High Country Horse Camp in Konnarock, Va. Went about 6 - 7 yrs. ago. Had built the barns and was beginning to make lots of changes. Has anyone been recently? Would love some info on camping...suitable for big LQ rigs (easy in/out) and general opinions. I enjoyed the trails and I assume you still have to do Elk Garden to access the majority of the trails. Do they trailer you to any other trails, etc.? Appreciate some feedback!

Little has changed at High Country. I have seen some good sized rigs in the camping area. Mine is 24 feet not counting the goose neck, we have no problem getting in and out. The stalls are nice, the bath house is ok and we did not eat at the resturant. It was only open on saturday. You can still access all the areas of Mount Rogers. We do go in on the side close to Elk Garden/Flat top. http://www.campingfriend.com/HighCountryHorseCamp/default.asp?file=...

Thanks so much! I think we will go ahead and see about some dates. I will check their website too. We will be coming from Chrlotte area (Ft. Lawn, SC). Is there a best route to take or better yet....is there one you DON'T want to take, especially with big rigs ..LOL!! Appreciate the info!

Another option is Rocky Hollow Horse Camp, about 10 miles from Konnarock, down Rt 603 near Troutdale, past the public Fox Creek Horse Camp. We have a place nearby and know the owners, Bill and Babara Russell, who work hard to welcome visitors. They have a website by that name. Direct trail access into Mt Rogers NRA. Large rigs do use their campground.

Questions for Henrynva We will be at Rocky Hollow Horse Camp in June and are trying to find a map of the trails for Mt Rogers NRA. Do you know where we can get a map?
Here is the link for a map. on the map is a phone number that you can call and get a very very detailed map for about 8$. I have one that I have used for years, making notes on it about the trails. We are headed there in august.

We will be coming up on I-77 (from S.C) and would like the best route to High Country. I know there are several ways, but I also know there are some that are really tough....would like the best big rig-friendly route! From there we will be going on to Fries, Va. and Hungry Horse East. Any info about route from High Country to Hungry Horse would be great too!

To Miss Kitty: You can get a copy of the National Geographic map of Mt Rogers area that includes horse trails at the NRA Visitors Center which is on Hwy 16 on your way to Troutdale. If you are traveling on I-81 you would be taking Exit 45 towards Troutdale. Rocky Hollow Horse Camp also gives out a map of trails, but most of these trails are not marked.

These directions are from the website. I added my own as we go there frequently traveling from I-81
North Directions: SHORTEST DISTANCE: Interstate 81 - Exit 35 at Chilhowie, VA. Take County Road 762/Whitetop Road South for 12 miles. This road crosses Iron Mountain and requires a heavy duty vehicle as the road is up and over with few curves. Whitetop Road intersects with Highway 603 at the bottom of the mountain. Continue on Whitetop Road and cross the Laurel Creek Bridge. The Outpost is on the left. Go approx 100 yards and make a sharp LEFT TURN onto Whitetop Road. The Camp is 1 mile up the mountain on the RIGHT past the Country Cemetery. There are two drive ways to enter the camp. DO NOT miss as there are no turn arounds on the ascent to Mt Rogers.< ALTERNATE DIRECTIONS: Exit 45 off Interstate 81 @ Marion VA. South on Highway 16 to Troutdale VA. Turn right onto Highway 603 @ Jerry's kitchen for 12 miles to Whitetop Road. Turn left onto Highway 600 -Whitetop Road for 100 yards, and then left again onto Highway 600-Whitetop Road. Camp is one mile up on right.
USE THE ALTERNATE DIRECTIONS WITH THESE. Take I-77 and merge onto I-81 south toward Bristol. go to Marion, exit 45 is the second exit. Route 603 is about 17 miles to Jerry's Kitchen. take a right at Jerry's onto Fairwood road and drive all the way to the end. (It is about 12 miles.) (You will pass Foxcreek horse camp on the right.) (You will pass Grindstone camp ground on the left about 2 miles before you get to the end of Fairwood road.) Then turn left on highway 600-White top Road and then left again. Go slow , you don't want to turn around.!!!!

Looking at the map, coming up from I-77, pulling an LQ, would you get off at Hillsville, take 58 to 16 , to Troutdale and up that way or got past that exit to I-81? Which is the least stressful and safest pull?

if you get off at Hillsville, be prepared for a very long, narrow, winding road with some very steep climbs. I posted the easiest way to get into high country. There are several but each has its challanges.
