I have a horse that is experiencing hives off & on through the year. I am looking for a supplement that would help his coat and possibly fend off his problem. I believe he is eating something in the pasture but it is so intermittent that I can not figure it out. I have looked at the Platinum Performance products but found them to be out of my price range. I have not found herbal suppliements to be of any help for any condition. Any ideas???

check out omegafields.com and read about the omega horseshine. lots of testimonials and much more affordable than platinum performance (which is a great product as well). Just ordered a 50# bag today, but I have 5 horses on it.

My friend had good luck feeding flax seed to her mare who is allergic to the no-see-ums that we have. It is high in Omega-3 fatty acids and helps with inflammation. One of my friends horses is allergic to acorns and most likely the oak leaves. He gets hives at the same time each year when the acorns are on the ground and she finally figured it out.

We have had great results with ground flax seed that we get from Omega fields. We had a TWH gelding that looked like he had the measles and after starting the flax seed the size and amount of the bumps decreased. We also feed it to our other horses that do not have any skin conditions and their coats are shiny year round.

Try feeding DAC oil. It is a mixture of rice bran oil, flax seed oil, wheat germ oil. I have had great sucess using it. I feed it to show steers and the horses. Of course in the winter being all fuzzy can't really see much, but when they shed out BIG difference. I get the five gallon bucket but they sell it in gallon size also. DAC stands for Direct Action Company.

Both flax seed and BOSS are great supplements for the skin and coat. WOrk up to about a cup of the one you choose. A tip on the flax, buy the 'whole flax' because it will last longer and grind it up right before you feed it. It spoils very quickly. If you live in a warm climate or it gets hot/humid in the summer. store it in your house. It also gets 'buggy' easily.
