I'm looking for someplace new to ride for hubby & I, that isnt too terribly far; Has anyone ridden/camped here? What can you tell me about it? (Any pics would be great too!). From the maps, it looks like some rough yet stunning riding:) Thanks in advance:)

Reserve your camping spot for WCM NOW! Most spots may already be filled. Kickapoo only has a primitive camping area; no water, no bathrooms.

You can also stay at End of the Trail Campground, it's a private campground. BUT...most spots are reserved one year in advanced. Jan & Moose can be contacted at equineexpress@centurytel.net please tell them I sent you their way. It may be a few days before Jan replies, as they are leave the area for the winter.

From End of the Trail you can access both WCM adn Kickapoo.

BUT...if you camp at WCM you would need to drive to Kickapoo, as they are miles apart. But, End of the Trail is smack dab in the middle.

Both trail systems are wonderful! If you like challenging trails!

Your horse must be in condition for these trails!! They are steep, single track and demanding. It's best to ride Kickapoo with someone who knows the trails.

Keep in mind, that if it rains....they shut the trails down! As they are steep and they want to prevent trail erosion.

I had friends who went down there for week and never got to ride, cuz it rained every day. They were very disappointed. Long way to drive to sit on camp.

I love riding there!! Love the trails and love staying at Jan & Moose's place.

We went last summer, it's really nice.  We stayed at End of the Trail, and yes, Moose and his wife are super nice!

We reserved the Artesian Well site, it's really nice.  We had a pasture for our horses too.  I liked the trails, but didn't know we'd have to ride the road so far to get there.  It's really neat, were glad we went.

Here are some pictures:

Hi Pam,

The trails are similar to Prairie Du Chein, but steeper and more narrow. I love it there, have fun!

Yes, I have heard the trails are awesome. I have a big western saddle (used to ride all English style) and my trusty mount so I will be just fine. Plus I have great friends that understand my concern (I used to not like steep trails with a walker I had that didn't know how to go down hills (not fun) and riding in a small English style saddle) and I am so looking forward to it.

We rode there without any problems on the trails.  My son was 9 and didn't have any problems either.  My husband's young gelding did turn around on a ledgy trail one day, but he didn't fall too far (my husband wasn't on him).

We went to Praire after Wildcat, it was good riding too.  I love the camping there!!

Raven, I bought a Crates Maleta Brown saddle. Both of my saddle fitters said it looked like it would work.  So I am ready for those steep hills unless it is muddy then I will still be afraid.  Lukka goes super slow down the hills. Of course when we get to the bottom she likes to go.  Gotta work on that.
