I am considering purchasing a Titan steel frame LQ trailer and wondered if anyone had any experience (good or bad) with Titan or any feedback on how well their trailers are made and hold up over time?  Any thoughts on towing a steel frame/galvaneal (spelling?) trailer vs all aluminum.  Thanks.

I have a 1998 titan 3 horse renegrade II gn and it has been a great trailer.  Still looks like new.  I haven't had any problems with it.  I do like the yr of mine compared to the newer ones.  I have seen the newer ones, they are still good trailers.  Just think mine is built better.   It pulls good, not heavy.

My Logan is all galvaneel, had it 2 years and its 3 years old, no complaints.  We are just getting around to building a shelter for it, its lived outside in the Pacific Northwest its entire life and isn't rusting anywhere.  But I'll be glad to get it under cover.

My only observation is with the size of LQ trailers, the steel vs. aluminum weight argument starts to really show.  My trailer has the 8'LQ, mid tack, and three horse stalls.  7'6" tall, 7'+ wide (either 7'4" or 7'6"), and it weighs nearly 11,000 lbs empty.  Add 3 horses and 1000 lbs of gear and I am right at my truck's max towing capacity of 15,000 lbs.  Normally I only haul one horse but I'd still be more comfortable if I had a little bit better weight margins.  My friend's 10' LQ, mid tack, four horse stall 7' tall x 8' wide Sundowner (aluminum over steel) only weighs 9500 lbs empty.  She has more trailer that weighs less.

The big selling point for me was the fact I bought this trailer for $10k less than any comparable aluminum trailer I could find.  And even at $10k more, every aluminum trailer in that price range was many years older, meaning all the components likely had more wear (tires, LQ appliances, wheel bearings, brakes, etc).  So I felt like I got the best deal I could find at the time.  Only time will tell if the galvaneel construction will hold up to rust.  $10k in savings seemed like enough to take the risk of not going with aluminum.  I see older galvaneel trailers in the area regularly (Logans, Trails West, etc.) that seem to not have rust issues so I'm hoping that having a newer model, the galvaneel has an even better chance of holding up.

Have you found that the Titan's hold their value?  Also, I am purchasing from an individual but want to look at financing options.  Can you recommend any finance companies?

Thanks for your help.

We had a 2000 Titan. Sold it in 2003 for the same amount we paid for it. Just added A/C and an awning. Not too bad for 3 years of use. The only thing I don't like is the telescoping divider is hard to pull out. And the fiberglass roof leaked where it joined the steel roof. Took several caulk jobs, but finally fixed it. The galveneal worked very well. I believe the new Titan now have diamond plate over the fenders and under the gooseneck. This should help with rock dings and potential rust spots.

Another brand you can look at is the Trailswest. Been pleased with that brand too and the divider will lie flat against the wall.

Try First Internet Bank of Indiana for financing.

Small rusting at seams, but easily handled. telescoping divider kinda tough, came from factory with chinese bearings, 3rd time serviced, they were shot, replaced with American heavier bearings, great ever since. Not bad for a mid entry steel trailer...this is a 96 model..

I want to add my experience with fuel economy in relation to weight.  Before buying my LQ trailer, I pulled a plain 3 horse trailer with 4' shortwall tack, no LQ features whatsoever.  I get exactly the same mileage with my almost 2x as heavy LQ trailer.  Talked with others who have had the same experience.  So fuel economy should not be a reason to buy aluminum over steel.

Thanks for your reply.  What are you towing your trailer with?

Dually diesel F350.   Brought it home with a SRW diesel F350 and gladly upgraded to the dually a short time afterwards.  Like everyone says, the SRW truck pulled the trailer fine but the dually rear end (and in my case, a longer wheel base as my old truck was a short box) gives more stability.  Not much difference cruising down the freeway or around town at low speeds, but if you have to make an emergency lane change or other quick maneuver, you sure appreciate the stability of the dually rear end.

Hi Again,

I am looking at a Titan Renegard 3H with LQ....8' SW and will never carry more than two horses.  Do you think a 2500HD diesel, long bed would do it?

I rarely haul more than one horse and feel the difference is night and day.   This opens up the dually/no dually discussion again and you will find opinions all over the board.   I shared my opinion based on handling.  You will find others argue the no-dually opinion because the trailer is within towing capacity of a SRW truck.   My opinion or anyone else's for that matter doesn't make a difference.  Just yours.  If you don't already have a gooseneck ball in the bed of your truck, see if you can borrow a similar truck and take the trailer out for a test drive.  Then do the same with a dually.  Only you can make that decision.  But as long as I have a full LQ trailer (not a 4-6' shortwall weekender, for example), I will always want to tow it with a dually.  Again, that's just my opinion.
