Got ready to ride this morning, and noticed blood coming out of my mares nostril. Fresh red blood, running out in same manner as clear mucus drains out. It didn't last long, only left side, but I'm not gonna ride her. I looked inside and could see no cuts, it's coming from higher up (like sinus cavity) No other symptoms.

Any ideas?? Any body else experience this??

She could've bumped it on something. One side, I wouldn't be overly concerned but if it happens again then I'd call your vet. If it were both sides, there would be definate concern.

I have seen a few horses do this-happens just the once and never again.  Unless it happens again I wouldn't worry.

My mule does this every once in a while.  The first time it happened I threw her in the trailer and took her directly to the equine clinic.  After scoping, the vet decided it was nothing more than a broken blood vessel in her nostril.  She hadn't done it for a while, and then this past Saturday, I noticed it again.  She has bled from both nostrils, not a whole lot, but enough to drip a little bit.  Freaked me out the first time I saw it.  Vet said the dry weather may have something to do with it.  Dry nostrils just like a person.

Weird....when my mare bled from both nostrils at the same time, the vet scoped her and she had Gutteral Pouch Mycosis. I had to take her to State to have surgery. It was touch and go for 6-8 weeks. It's a fungus that invades the gutteral pouch(which cools the blood before reaching their brain)and weakens the vessels.......in turn would errupt in bleeding from both nostrils. She was extremely anemic and I'm lucky she clotted. She's alive and doing well.......

We're talking about 2 different types of bleeding.  My mule's bleeding was just a drip.  One nostril at a time.  Not both at the same time.  I once boarded a horse with Guttural Mycosis.  Sometimes refered to as bastard strangles.  They bleed as if someone slit their throats.  Totally different.  Hope your mare did o.k..  The horse we had was put down.

Anytime you see Myc or Myco as a prefix that means fungus, and that has nothing to do with bastard strangles. You might have been mistaking for empyema, pus around the lung cavity, a term which could be used for bastard strangles.

Thank you for clarifying that...........and no, Bastard Strangles isn't associated with Mycosis.

My friend's gelding bleeds from his nose on occasion. No particular time or circumstance. As you noted, just a trickle. It has happened about 4 times in two years. Her vet is not concerned. Just a broken capillary - like you and I sometimes get a nosebleed. For peace of mind, a call to your vet for his/her reaction might be a good thing. Just to get the input. Also, you might want to note it on a calendar. When, how long, what time, etc. This way you can track it, if it becomes a more frequent occurence. They do like to keep us worrying, though, don't they!

Hate to differ with you, but my equine clinic called this horse's guttoral pouch mycosis "bastard strangles".  they're only vets, what do they know.  Now back to the horse with the dripping nose.  Take him to the vet . . .  they may know something  maybe

It isn't caused by Strep. The organism if you will differs from Bastard Strangles.
