Hello, we have 3 horses and have been given two Shetland ponies, from the winter they look like little buffalo's. We need to purchase clippers and there are a lot of options, can anyone suggest a brand they are happy with and is single or adjustable clipper better?

Hi...I have a Icelandic Horse (VERY FURRY) and a mini mare (TINY...BUT VERY FURRY). MMy advice to you would be to invest in a clipper that will do the job, be easy to use and lsat you a lifetime. I use a Double KK clippers....they are AWESOME! Worth every pretty penny! Enjoy your new furry ponies.

Never heard of KK clippers...I have always used Oster clipmasters.  Clipping is definetely not my favorite chore....I would prefer to hire someone else to do it if you can find someone!

Look into Oster clippers for livestock, horse clippers are kinda wimpy IMHO.  Livestock shears can make quick work of all that hair.  Some of the livestock shows around here have places that do repair/sharpening and they also sell used models.

I've killed just about every clipper I've ever owned except for all my Osters.

What model do you use for show clipping?  I need to get some and this is all WAY beyond my experience.

I too prefer the Double K clippers. They last forever! I bodyclip a couple of mules several times a year with mine and have never had them let me down.  They are so powerful, you don't even have to wash the animal first but it is recomended to prevent dulling of the blades. They take A5 blades. My current set has been with me since Dec 99. They replaced a 14 yr old set that was stolen from me when our barn tackroom was robbed. You can buy them at Schneiders.

For small cordless clippers, I use the Arco. I still have my big sumbeams and my A5, but I rarely use them.

Terri, I use the Oster Golden A5 2 speed clipper.

Body part, clipper blade size, etc:

legs, 10 or 15, I clip the whites a week or so early so they look crisp with French white

ears, 40 or 50, clip every last hair inside and around edges

muzzle, razor blade, but 40 or 50 on inside of nostril for the fuzzy hair

eyes, 40 or 50, eye wiskers only don't cut the lashes!

rest of head and throat latch, can be anything from a 15 to 40 depending on animals hair and show type

bridle path, 40 or 50, lay the ear down at the longest point the ear touches the bridle path is the length is should be cut for stock horses and I start a little behind the pole to give more forelock hair...Arabs cut their BP's longer to accentuate the swan like necks

belly guard hair, any blade with the proper guard you only want to cut guard hair not body hair

Terri, I hope this helps clipping is an art much like any other hair design.  A great clip job can take a pasture pony to the winners circle and a bad one can keep you out of it!

Thanks. I'm going to try to find a trainer near here to help us out since we aren't going to do the 4-H show.
