Hi again, as you can tell I'm making my Arkansas trip plans. Can anyone comment on Center Point Horse camp? I read that is right across from CenterPoint trail head... like how far?

What were the outdoor stalls like and general condition of the camp? Was it noisy being right next to the highway?

Buffalo River Ranch has some nice reviews except for the fact that you have to ride an hour to get to the Buffalo River trails? Is there only 1 trail to get to the main trails? And is that 1 hour on gaited? What is the camp like and stall conditions?

I've got Spring fever real bad... need to dream about summer vacations!

We stayed there last fall. We plan on going back. It is a very small campground and there's probably 2 sites that you can get a big trailer in. Ours is about 40 ft. and we were able to fit without too much problem. There are lots of trees for shade, picnic tables and firerings. We didn't go into the bathhouse but I'm sure it was nice. The pens are nothing fancy but they are plenty safe and just right behind the campsites. The centerpoint trailhead is just across the road. We didn't get to ride as much as we had hoped as we had truck problems that messed us up but what we did ride was beautiful. It is very rocky and the trail from Centerpoint th took us 1 hr and 20 min. on QH to get down to the river. Once there you could ride up Sneeds Creek trail, on down the Buffalo and also over to Steele Creek. There was a trail that was a short ways down Centerpoint that was supposed to go down to Ponca and Steele Creek but we didn't get to ride it. The owner of the campground is very nice and is just getting started. He is supposed to have a stock trailer you can rent now which would be great. You could trailer out to the Compton Th which is only a few miles N and ride to Erbie or you could trailer to Steel Creek which is just a few miles S and have endless riding there. The elk in Boxley valley are just down the mountain from the campground. We drove down and watched them in the evenings. Saw over a hundred head.

Pooper! Those are GREAT pics!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It makes me want to ride. I think Centerpoint camp is fine, but pretty small and too close to the road. Buffalo River Ranch is more secure, but a longer ride down to the river.... or over to Steel Creek (the primitive camp there is ok and has H20).

Pooperscooper - Thanks for the info and pics! Oh, I am wanting to go right now!

We saw elk when we were there in 2001. We loved to hear the Buggleing at dusk. I had heard that the original herd had to be put down due to Brucellosis, not sure if that was true. So glad to see they are back and thriving.

If you click on the little picture on top it will take you to my photobucket album and there's over 100 pics of the area.

We didn't mind being close to the road. The traffic was very little after dark. It was nice to jump in the truck after supper and seeing the elk in about 5 minutes. Would love to stay at Steel Creek but no way could we park our trailer there so hoping he has the stock trailer and we would just trailer down and start from there one day. That was our first trip to ride in that area and we are hooked. Soon as we get the ponies legged up we'll be heading that way again.

Your buckskin and mine could be related.  Marking on the forehead are similar.

Just a side note.....there were some privately owned animals that had to be put down, in a little differenct area of the state,  but the herd there at the Buffalo have thrived more each year since their importation.  Great!

What do you mean that you have to ride over an hour to get to the trails from Buffalo River Ranch? Is that just to get to the river or is that to get to any trails? We were planning on an Oct. trip there and now I may have to rethink it.

Thanks.

Judy

Its between 45" and an hour to the river, but there are trails east or west that take you through some pretty places... west takes you through some dramatic water and rock features, then you can go over to Steel Creek, have a break, and ride back along the creek near Low Gap... Jim will usually guide you if you like, and, he has been known to trailer you over to Erbie if you want the awesome trails.

We have not stayed at Centerpoint, our rig is too big, but they are just across from Centerpoint trail, and you can get to Hemmed in Hollow..
