Can you install an exhaust brake on a Duramax? What is the cost usually and what brands are the best? I've called all the brake shops around here and they don't know anything about them.

Something else that works well on the Diesel GM trucks without having to go to an actual EB.  The product that BANKS POWER has out called the "SPEEDBRAKE".  This is a plug and play type product that works with the truck and transmissions computer system.  Go to www.bankspower.com for more information.

The speed brake sounds like an option but looks like it is for 04 and newer trucks and ours is an 03. Do those max brakes and smart brakes work like an exhaust brake? I really like our truck, gets good fuel mileage and lots of power but just not enough stopping power for our big trailer.

pooperscooper,  get on the GMC diesel forum and read the comments.  I forget what the forum is called. Everything that I read was positive. I have an 01 Duramax/Allison and have considered an exhaust brake.  I did a bunch of research and had it down to BD or Pak Brake, and was leaning toward BD.  If I remember correctly, I was looking at $1,800 purchase price for the unit. The only reason that I held off was the cost and also that I have SRW and regret that I didn't hold out for a dually, as this truck's only job is towing.  Talk to your local diesel truck shop. Any shop that does diesel light and medium duty will probably have done quite a few of these. I think that many of the GMC medium duty trucks already come with the exhaust brakes. One of my trusted regular mechanics (GMC, Peterbuilt truck shop) said that would I be pleased.  Apparently, it definately removes a good degree of the pucker factor. Quite a few folks in this area of the country have them.  The only thing that I have heard on the downside, but is totally preventable is that they stick (butterfly valve I think) if they are not used for a long time.  My mechanic said to activate it every so often in the winter if I wasn't towing.  He also said that he would advise a yearly lubricating to help prevent this issue.

I have the BD Exhaust Brake on on 2006 Ford.  It works well.

My friend has the Pac Brake on his Dura Max,  Not sure what year his truck is.  But that also has worked well when I've shared rides with him.

For the Ford Automatics. BD is the only choice.   You would have to reseach on the Duramax to see if one if better than other. But both are reputable companies.

Not sure about the year models, I thought the D-max trucks had the same tranny from 2001 till 05 or 06 when more electronics was added.  Yes, works simular to an EB from what I have read about it.  I would call Banks direct and ask them.  Do some research on the different makers of EB's before you spend the money, I had a BD on an older model Dodge a few years back and ended up taking it off.  I was spending too much time trying to clean out the butterfly valve on the inside.  It was getting built up with soot and sticking either open or closed depending on what day it was.

I think a good exhaust brand like corsa performance can fit in to the GMC Duramax. If ever it is not, try to see things on other brands or parts or stores around the area or in the internet. I hope that all will be well by now if you have found out that one.

I would try PacBrake first they have been a very good company to work with and have a excellent product.  You have to understand that BD and Banks only experence is with pickup truck brakes.  PackBrake started with medium and heavy duty trucks, busses and military vehicles

Banks Brake® http://www.bankspower.com/products/group/5-Exhaust%20Brakes and then choose your truck model...
