Can anyone give me information about riding at Golden Hills? We loved going there a few years ago, but the last time we went the trails were so messed up we could not find our way around. Would really appreciate any current information about this place. Thanks.

Hey. Don't waste your time and $$$$. Chuck Golden started a great business years ago, then they got a "bright idea" to develop it into little tiny lots with houses and small barns all over where the trailheads were. They also tried to market it with "Gawani Ponyboy", R.Shrake, and others... Now it is not well marked, and you spend alot of time riding around a neighborhood!!! They also serve "prison food". If you want a decent ride and must have meals available, try Big Creek or Cross Country trailrides. There is also a nice camp in Black, Mo. called Brushy Creek... check out Trailrider magazine for info on lots of camps.
Can't wait to ride/ camp all over the place SOON!!!!

I second Calamity. Goldenhills stalls are a joke too. Bring a hammer cause you'll need to do repairs.
Big Creek is my favorite place to stay in that area. If you go on the organized rides the food is really good. I also like staying there during non-organized rides. Very peaceful and soooo many miles of trails to ride. Just be sure to bring a GPS. The river and hills can get you turned around as none of the trails are marked.
Whispering Pines is a smaller campground, but we never stayed there because the stalls are not big enough for my husbands MFT gelding. You can ride to here from Big Creek and vice-versa.
We have heard great things about Brushy Creek too. Gonna check them out this summer.

Thanks for the input. I am bummed that Golden Hills has gone down hill. It was a great place before they started selling off lots. I was hoping that they had fixed the trail situation. I agree that the riding at Big Creek and Whispering Pines is great. I'm planning on attending a competitive trail ride event at Brushy Creek in May, I've heard good things about that place.

Are the trails marked at Slabtown?
Greg the owner does a great job getting you situated and making sure you know where trails are and were to go. He will even take you out if you want him to. He took us on a beautiful ride the first time we were down there. That area is gorgeous down there. We are going back Memorial Day and cant wait to get there. Very nice place and nicely set up.

Has anyone ridden here recently that could give an update? This thread doesn't give a very glowing review, but the recent comments on Horse Trail Directory are all glowing. Thanks in advance.

Today I would still repeat my previous post. There is an awesome camp and trail facility south of Hwy 60 near Mountain Grove, Missouri called Flyin R... Google it. Nice people, nice camp, can get meals, has a tack and convenience shop, has bunkhouse rooms, cabins, and hookups for horsetrailers. Nice layout, good covered stalls. We don't even go to Slabtown, Big Creek, or the others anymore... It is too easy to go to the places we love to make great memories....

we just got home from riding Flying "R" Ranch near West Plains ,MO. As previously said, the owner and staff are great. This camp was well thought out when being built so everything is there and very handy. The trails are good and well marked . I highly recommend Flying "R" Ranch.
