Can anyone give me some advice? I have an aluminum trailer with white smooth outside. I grazed a building and it damaged the area on the outside of the trailer just to the left of the living quarter's door. I have heard that there is no way to fix the body of aluminum trailers if they are damaged. Is this true? I am just sick about it. Arlene

It can happen to the best of us, my guess is you're not the first one this has happened to. Hey, it could have been worse... You could have been T-Boned by a freight train. Sign your name to it and put the time and date that it happened beside the damaged area with a Sharpie pen.... If anyone says anything about it just reply. "If I could do this type of damage to my own trailer, just imagine what I could do to yours"!! Then smile and walk away before you pop them in the lip.

How deep, wide and long is the scratch?... A little rubbing compound and apply several coats of a good quality automotive wax and call it good. That's a hard fix, no matter what you do It will always look like a patch or repair.

Ths is not just a scratch. It actually put a dent in the aluminum and deep scratches all around it. I was watching the wheels when I did it because I didn't want to hit my bumper but I didn't notice the top part of the trailer. While I know that things could have been so much worse; it is still painful to look at the damage and think that I may not be able to repair it.

Get your trailer dealer, tractor trailer repair shop and your insurance company to take a look at it. Get several repair estimates and go from there.

If the damage is truly upsetting, the damaged areas can be either replaced or repaired using common automotive products. The damage can certainly be repaired by any competent body shop. It is quite easy, as there are no compound curves commonly found in automotive repairs.

The damage should be professionally evaluated, to first determine if any hidden structural defects will have to be addressed before the surface is repaired. If there are none, the first step involves feathering out the original paint around the damage. The paint will have to be removed over the damaged area. The scratch or dent can then be leveled with polyester body filler products, and then the repair is repainted to new standards.

Exactly matching the original colouring can be testing, because of the UV damage to the original finish. Many automotive paint suppliers have computer colour matching, and a good body man can blend the paint finishes, with various techniques and thinners. If necessary, a new clear coating can then be applied to one whole trailer side or just the panel, which will create an entirely new, even, surface finish.

Depending if there are structural issues involved, will determine whether it should be repaired or not. It then falls to your appearance standards. Generally, your trailer accident probably resulted in only a cosmetic issue. If you desire it, it can be restored to a new condition.

Most of these colored aluminum panels are just sheets of aluminum that are fastened to the frame with a 3M tape and sometime rivets.

I've been in Logan  Trailers plant and seen some trailers that they had torn down and were replacing the verticle studs before reapplying a new sheet to the exterior.  It can be fixed, I have no idea what the cost will be.

The sharpie pen suggestion is a good one!!!

Never thought of doing it and hadn't seen it done, but I'll file this one away to use with my employees.  When they damage one of the company trucks, I'm going to have them sign and date it.  haha

I have wonderful news about my trailer. I had the service department at 4-Star in Bowling Green look at it. They were able to cut out the damaged part and replace it. They did an excellent job and it is difficult to even tell anything had happened to it. They saved me a lot of money by repairing it that way. I think one of you had actually made the suggestion to try that approach. I am so pleased and my resolution for 2009 is to try not to hit any buildings!!! Thanks for all of your suggestions.
