I'm going to a place that has "RV hookups" in a couple of weeks.  My trailer is not wired so I need to know what type of extension cord to get so I can use a microwave and small heater or fan.  The place told me that the RV hookups have a special prong type that fits with RV cords.  Is that the one that looks kind of like the washing machine or dryer cord end?  Can I find one of these at WalMart or do I need to go to an RV store?  Do I need anything else?

Help!  I'm clueless.      Thanks!

Erin

Hi Erin ...

Most Horse camp sites have the ordinary 120 volt 15 amp plug-in's  like your house.  Some RV places also have either a 30 amp or 50 amp rv plug-in too.  I doubt the campsite will only have the RV plug... But if they do... You'll want a 30 amp RV to 15 amp adapter.  It'll look like a "Y" the prongs being angles together.  It only be a couple of buck$.

A hint:  Don't cheap out on extension cords.  Buy the heavier ones.  I have two 50' # 10 cords.  Electronics like a microwave or A/C units don't like the voltage drop caused by long + small gauge extension cords.

 Hi go2italy,

Yes,Wal-mart does carry an adapter to use at campgrounds that have rv type hook-ups. The male side will fit the rv plug and the female side will fit a standard three prong 110volt-15amp plug.

As far as the type of extension cord to use, look at the literature on different cords when you shop for one. This should tell you which one will be appropriate to run the type of appliances that you have(according to their wattage rating). The extension cord will need to be of sufficient wire size for the appliance(s) that you intend to run and this will change according on how long a extension cord that you need (longer cord=larger wires). It is important to get a large enough extension cord to do the job cause if it's not it can cause the cord to heat up and be a fire hazard, not to mention that to small a cord can damage your appliances.

                   good luck,Ardly

There are NO ignorant questions, except for the one that don't get asked !

So don't be bashful, just ask away....there are plenty of us that learned the hard way and are anxiouse to share our experience and save someone else the problems that caused us to be so learned.

Thanks for your question and welcome.

When you go to get the adapter, go to the automotive section where the RV stuff is.  Not the hardware section.  (like my husband did, poor clueless guy)

Thank you all for your help today - I'm off to WalMart to do some research. I talked to my trailer man and we discussed wiring my trailer, but I'm waiting to see how often I really use it before I spend the money. It's a Catch-22, if I keep spending $$ on my trailer and going off for the weekend, my non-horse riding husband's going to get ticked and then I'll be sleeping in the thing!

Well, at least you'll be comfortable.  I'm sure one day I'll end up in my horse trailer, hubby will end up in his 5th wheel and the kids will rule the house.  The more work I do now, the more comfortable I will be later.
