This has probably been discussed before, but I currently have a 97 Ford F350 2WD DRW 7.3 diesel powerstroke, and I really want to upgrade to a later model with 4WD and SRW. I have two trailers to haul, one is a 4H Sundowner with midtack and 5' shortwall, and one is a 2H Trailet with DR. Do you think I can get away with having a SRW versus a DRW? The big concern is the Sundowner, it is 24' on the box 30' with the gooseneck, and GVWR of 12,200.

Can a SRW pull the 4 horse Sundowner ?

Sure ... But do you put 4 four horses in it? and fill it with tack and stuff?   The hitch weight when loaded as you use it is the final factor for this decision.  That seems like a lot of potential weight for a SRW.  Best way to get this piece of information is to load up your trailer and take it to a scale.  Weigh each set of axles, then weigh your truck separately.  You'll be able to calculate the hitch weight and the total trailer weight then.

I use a dually for a 3 horse 4 foot short wall Sundowner

I pulled a 4 horse with my 4x4 srw F250 crew cab and it did a great job, pulled a flatbed hay trailer 21150 total wt.14500 on trailer axles.

Bought a new Lq trailer and went with the Dually one ton.Pulled it home with the old truck but squated a bit it is a Trails west 10x15 lq with amt and slide so felt I needed the extra wheels.

Question is how much do you pull the trailer and how many hills. If any question in your mind go with the dually! too much is better than not enough.

I purchased mine at less than the single wheel truck because it had been on the lot longer and they wanted My truck because of the color, bright amber, a scratch magnet !!went with white on new one paint seems to hold up better and not scratch as much.

We have the two 1-ton trucks in my signature

We haul an Exiss three-horse gooseneck trailer, with the 4 foot short wall.  When it is loaded with our big horses and cargo, around 9,000 pounds.  Even with our trailer, which isn't as heavy as your trailer, the difference in stability between the two trucks is significant enough (especially at highway speeds when passing the big semi’s or in wind), that I don't think we will ever haul long distances with anything other than a dually.

Don't get me wrong, the 1-ton SRW truck hauls just fine, we used it a lot for hauling before we had the dually and were perfectly happy.  We thought we were going to purchase a LQ trailer, that’s why we bought the dually.  We aren’t going to buy the LQ trailer in the near future, but I don’t think we will ever be without a dually again.

The dually is a pain for some things such as reaching into the bed etc.BUT once you tow with one its hard to go back to a SRW.I'd like to turn mine into a Western hauler bed.Just easier to deal with overall.

Interesting topic. I'm glad to see it. I haul a 3 horse w/ 10' LQ and slide with an '03 Dodge 250 diesel and automatic trans. Total weight 23,700 lbs. I'd like to get a 350 Dually w/ 6 speed after reading this thread. No problems with the 3/4T SW but the next truck will be a one-ton dually.

manymorgans, we have a 2001 F350 SRW PSD w/6spd manual tranny and use it during the week and weekends as a "prime-mover" in our business and the horse trailer.  During the week it pulls a flatbed GN that regularly carries 10K-12K and it's a 14K GVW trailer. On the weekends, it pulls a BEE Stinger 3H with LQ and GVW for the trailer is 12,800 pounds.  The box on the trailer is about 27' and overall is about 34' and our truck does just fine.  I KNOW I'm at limits of capability for the truck and approaching my comfort limits with the truck as well.  Stopping is never a problem, pulling isn't a problem on hills and I make sure my tires are in excellent condition.  With what I'm asking my truck to do right now, I'm VERY comfortable with my SRW Superduty. Happy trails.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I decided to go with the 2006 Ford F350 Lariat DRW, although I still would have liked SRW this time. The dually is just such a  boat to drive around town. Rather be safe than sorry however. Anyone here own one, how do you like it? I pick it up on Tuesday.
