Getting a hip replacement done Dec. 2 and wanted to get some feedback from any of you that have already had this done. Have a replaced knee already and did fine. It is my right hip and to be honest, it has given me so much trouble the last year that I"m actually looking forward to getting something done. Of course, I told my surgeon that riding was a MUST!! LOL! What can I expect rehab and recovery time wise, etc. Thanks for any input!

My sister-in-law had a hip replacement about 4 years ago and is able to ride without any problems. She was about 55 when she had it replaced. It was a horse riding accident that was the reason for the replacement so she had to overcome that fear also. Good Luck

Thanks, Honor....I actually just wore my hip (and knee_) out with many years of competative sports. I was a little anxious when I started riding after my knee, but time took care of that. I just want to be pain free!

Had a Birmingham resurfacing done Feb 2008. Couldn't ride an hour before the pain was too much to bear. Started riding two months post op. Follow your hip precautions well. Dislocating a new hip is a disaster and painful. I felt so much better three weeks after surgery, I sprained a hamstring taking the back steps two at a time again. (take it easy and heal before injuring yourself like I did) The hip is good for the 8 hour rides again...tho the butt isn't.

It really helps the comfort level if you can get your stirrups a little more forward than you might be used to if you ride a western saddle. Puts less strain on the joint that way.Marla

I chose to have a hip replacement almost 2 years ago. It was only painful when I rode, but I wasn't about to give up riding. I knew the arthritis would only get worse with time, not better. It was the best thing I ever did. I was riding 6 weeks later and have had no pain since. Do it! The first 2 weeks won't be fun, but you will be so happy when it is over.

Got my new hip about 3 years ago. Was in absolute agony before, out of pain the day after surgery. It is a miracle!Anyway I ride daily, many times more than one horse. My doc originally said 12 weeks but seeing me at 6 said go for it. Only trick was it was my right hip so I got on from the off side for awhile, just to be careful. Never have had a problem since. The best advice I can give you is be in the best shape you can be when you go in for surgery. It really helps to be trim and fit. You will recover easily and quickly. Good luck! and feel free to PM me if you need any more encouragement Hope I HelpedLuna
