One of my daughters is attending college in Southern Utah. She called and invited me to come see her in one of her classes end of semster performances. I'm not a great fan of the performing arts, But I do try to support my daughters,So I traveled to the opposite end of the state tow attend. But I really had an alternative motive of while there sneeking in a couple more horse rides before winter truely sets in.
We rode in the Red Cliff Reserve area and in Zions National Park. Both are pretty close by and offer some stunning scenry to ride through.
This is heading out from the truck heading toward the Maze located in Red Cliff Reserve. They don't recommend you dragging trailers all the way into the last parking area. So saddle up and ride across the sagebrush
This is over close to where the maze starts. It a labrynth of trails that wind and weave thru the boulders and cliffs.
Heading down in
We both were ponying extra horses. Mainly because I brought a full trailer load and didn't have anywhere to leave the extras and they needed some exercise any way and because I'd pulled all my shoes a couple of weeks ago and I wanted to have a spare horse if my mine ride got a little tender footed.
This is truely color country. Lots of vivid colors in the earth

This group of Photos is from Zions National Park, Up the road 20 miles
This is the trail head
Heading down the trail
You can see we left the Cowboy hats in the truck. Wind was blowing to hard to keep them on and we had couple layers of coats on, making us all look a little bulky. Here is my geldings mane blowing in the wind as he studies a steep drop we have to descend
One of hte beauties of Utah is how far a person can see.
Working our way thru some of the rocks and gullies
You get to see Red Mountains, Green Pinon pines and Juniper trees and the ghostly bare Cottonwoods

Its not hard. Just look at the various bluffs, rock out cropping etc. Since we can see for miles and miles, it's easy to find the points you started with and know that you are parked to the north or south of some ridge or bluff.
We live in a land of extreme elevation changes, Water always runs down hill. Worst case, go down the drainage until it crosses a road somewhere. I don't care where you are in the west. You are never more than 20-25 miles from a road.
