We are looking for a place to go camping and trail riding for the first week of June. We would like to go in the Eastern Missouri, Eastern Arkansas or Western Tennessee area. We would like medium to challenging trails with great scenery. Having a cabin available would be a plus since it will be for a week and our trailer only has a changing area. We have ridden Shawnee, Wranglers and East Fork to give you an idea of our experience. Just looking for a new place to experience.

I have ridden East Fork, Shawnee, Brown County and Midwest but you can't beat Big SouthFork in Tennessee. There is a variety of trails along with river crossing and overlooks. There are rock shelters and rock formations. The trails are all very well marked and maintained and I believe they have over 200 miles of horse trails. There are quite a few campgrounds but go to HorseandMuleTrails and look them up. We have stayed at Saddle Valley and True West and liked them both. I would say in June, all the rhododendrum will be in bloom.

There is not much in West Tennessee,  Natchez Trace State Park, Chickasaw State Park (bunch of trails lost to the golf course) and LBL.  And that is about it.  Have not checked lately but there was a lot of damage at NT from the floods in the spring.  Would be a good idea to call and check the condition of the trails at NT.  The lodge and cabins are several miles from the barn.

Very few of the state parks/forests in Tennessee allow horses.  Really a sad situation.

I will second what has been said of Natchez Trace in West TN. We rode in late summer and there were alot of trails that had damage from the floods.  Alot of the bridges to cross did not seem safe to me.  Chickasaw has a horse camp.  However, I would think twice before venturing to that one.  Have you considered Loretta Lynn's in middle TN?  It is right across the TN river on the east side.  I think that there are places to rent to stay in.  There is a nice stream that runs through the camp.  It is only about 45 minutes pass Natchez Trace headed east in I-40.

interesting tidbit

Money-Rates.com published in September its list of the 10 worst states for retirees. That site, which examined such factors as crime rates, climate, longevity and economic conditions, including taxes, job opportunities and cost of living, found the worst states for retirees were, in order, Nevada, Michigan, Alaska, South Carolina, Maryland, Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina, Missouri and Arkansas.

Here are a couple of ideas for eastern Arkansas and eastern Missouri. In Arkansas, check out Village Creek State Park in Wynne. (Go to www. arkansasstateparks.com and click on Village Creek link) The trails here aren't particularly challenging, but they're scenic and shaded. They have a really nice, separate "horse campground" with paved parking pads, water, electric, handy dump station and clean bath houses. They also have really nice, modern cabins for rent. The barn has 10 x 10 covered stalls with ceiling fans! They even have two round pens to work your horse, if needed, before heading out on the trails. This is also a great place to lay over if you're headed up or down I-30 to another destination as Wynne is only about 13 miles from the interstate. Super cheap rates.

In Missouri, we liked Brushy Creek Lodge (www.brushycreeklodge.com) in the Mark Twin National Forest. More challenging trails... they also have cabins, a restaurant, covered stalls, nice folks.

Hope this helps...

I ride at Natchez Trace all the time. They have about 500 miles of trails. Yes, some of the stream crossings were a little trickly after the flood, but mos are ok now. They have endurance ride there.

The horse camp has an abundance of people camping most all the time.
