Someone emailed me, offered full price, no other questions, and said they wanted to pick up the trailer this week.   They wanted my address so they know where to go, and said they were paying cash ($40,000).   And the time on their email is Eastern Europe time.  Sounds fishy to me...

Ask them to do a wire transfer of funds to your account and see what happens.

If they show up with $40,000 cash, start thinking how you will explain it to your bank and the IRS, not to mention the DEA.

Do not give him any of your personal information.  Agree to meet him at a public place, like a Walmart parking lot.  Absolutely, do not give him banking information.  If it's not a scam, then you have $40,000.  If it is, then you are protected and only out the time and minimal expense to tow the trailer.  You will have to fill out IRS forms at the bank if they give you cash.  Do not take buisness checks, or any type of check including Amex travelers checks.  Certified funds only, i.e. money order.

Give them your neighbor's address, then watch from the window.... I wouldn't want them coming to my house from Europe to pay cash for a horse trailer that dosn't have a bow, wings, sails and or propellers... How do they intend on getting it back across the Atlantic. I guees they may have a ...TRANSPORTER!! They could "BEAM IT BACK".

I replied.....as follows:

Really?   Well, you will need to send me a copy of your U.S. driver's license plus two other forms of U.S. identification.  That's because your email contained Eastern European time on it.     I will arrange for us to meet at the State courthouse where I work (It's right across from the Sheriff's Department and County Jail).  My lawyer, who also works for the District Attorney's Office, can do all the paperwork for us.  Is that okay?

Sounds like it could be a scam. However I know of several instances where large cash transactions have occurred with land purchases. One was a down payment of an amount similar to what you are talking about. The other one was a cash purchase of a farm at an auction. The buyers took a suitcase full of money and after the sale the bank that owned the farm being sold told them they could have made arrangements so they didn't have to pay cash. Imagine that!

My wife used to clerk farm sales and occassionally someone would pay cash for something in the $10,000+ range.

Great way to handle it, even if it's not true .  Very interested to hear if they respond.
